We extrude ours. Makes the process easier!

Also wax resist handles can work great but for larger and longer handles you probably should do at least a 1hr preheat/candle. Had a few large steins with handles longer than 8" blow up in a bisque fire on the handles when I waxed them. Ceramics can only be pushed so far!

Wait until the ware is bone dry and then apply slip to any cracks that might appear on the handles during the drying process. Smooth out with small brush. We use a home made drying cabinet and our wares are usually ready for bisque in 24 hours or 32 for wares more than 2.5lbs (wet clay wght).
