#WalkPerspective. Here because we need safe walking, wheeling & cycling in Canadian cities. Posts by Martyn of Kjipuktuk/Halifax.
Can you believe that N American engineers combine turning movements on a green light with pedestrians on the walk sign, resulting in multiple times more injuries and fatalities than the deadly RTOR

The dead pedestrian is often implicitly portrayed as the wrong-doer, "crossing mid-block", dressed in dark clothing, etc.

This whole area belongs to vehicles, who do their own killings

York Region's annual safety reports identify that "Driver behaviour is the leading cause of motor vehicle collisions" but you won't hear that in their victim-blaming PSA's written by drivers, of course

The BC Coroner, conducting a review of child pedestrian deaths, recommended AGAINST the concurrent movement of people and vehicles, and FOR full separation in time and space.

49 pedestrian crashes at Main St & E Hastings over four years. A humane society with health and safety laws should require this to be a scramble intersection, separating people fully from moving vehicles

ready for next level victim blaming? Remember the "car" turned into you because you were wearing universally worn dark clothing.
And if struck on the sidewalk, maybe you weren't far enough from the road?

A fortress of Park & Rides around Amsterdam supports space for bike lanes and people in the central area.

Woman struck and killed in marked crosswalk. The girth of this residential intersection in N.E. Calgary is absurd

Four highway wide lanes, no actual pedestrian infrastructure of any kind, not even a stop sign.
This is how pedestrians die in Canada - because decision-makers and engineers support it.

Where the 94 year old was struck, instead of safe separation of people walking from people driving, we have a flimsy bump people sometimes advocate for.
Please - never ask for these instead of actual safe separation.
