Elderly person using mobility scooter struck and killed while using a crosswalk.

Alberta pedestrians might want to contact their councillor and request this incorrect, highly dangerous advice is removed asap:
"When pedestrians are crossing the intersection, you may proceed only when there is a safe gap between your vehicle and the pedestrians"
no such thing as a "safe gap"
Intersection safety starts with all of us.🚦
Last year, 15 pedestrians lost their lives on our streets. This number must go down.
January is Intersection Safety Month. This student-created video reminds us to slow down, put phones away, and stay cautious at intersections.

This from Victoria Police is how it should be put. Yes, it's a shared responsibility, BUT between a pedestrian and a car, only one of those has the capability to harm or kill the other

Horrific. RIP.
No mention of any driver involvement until some way through this article. Vehicles do not hit and kill pedestrians then flee the scene. Drivers do.

Municipalities in Canada are butchering Vision Zero to create watered down versions which use the lingo but not the methodology.
In HRM, the current per capita targets support overall increases in injury + fatal crashes.

Another comparison, on pedestrian fatalities:

Canada averages 300 pedestrian fatalities a year (pop 41 mil) - 5% of us walk to work. 80% drive.

UK: 405 ped fatalities in 2023 (pop 70 mil), but with a huge proportion starting their trip by walking (34%), more transit use
You know what blows my mind? Calgary’s traffic fatality rate (1.9 per 100,000) is far closer to Tokyo than to Houston.

Edmonton too (2.2 per 100,000).

I don’t fully understand it, but there’s a surprisingly wide range of just how car-centric and dangerous a car-centric city can be.
I wondered whether the smaller cars and trucks, the many narrower streets, and the generally slower speeds I’m seeing in Tokyo mean a lower pedestrian injury/fatality rate than North American cities. So I looked it up. Tokyo: 1.04 fatalities/100,000 people. Houston: 15 fatalities/100,000 people.

Three fatal pedestrian crashes in a 24 hour period for Calgary, the 11th pedestrian fatality of this year.

RIP, another senior struck and killed.
In Canada when a pedestrian dies, the driver is introduced by police and media as the hero and helper - "stayed at the scene", "attempted to deliver aid"

Prior to that, the act itself is always the Vehicles doing

Miles has no appreciation the brilliant Urbanism of Winnipeg. Canada should be proud of ploughing freeway-sized stroads through the heard of its biggest central city. Don't listen to Miles, Winnipeg, you are a beautiful, walkable paradise, second only to Amsterdam.
Then we walked out of the station and came across...this. I have to say, the walking environment in downtown Winnipeg is maybe the worst we've seen in any major city outside of, like, Florida. Even the side streets were one-way racetracks!
