What happens when we break down DSM diagnoses into their individual symptoms and rebuild our classification system from the ground up? Do we see familiar DSM constructs, HiTOP dimensions, or something else entirely?

New paper out today in CPS! ✨ journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

We’ve just published another video on HiTOP that tries to flesh out a bit more how the framework can be helpful in research: youtu.be/q0jOi_Nl1yo

We hope it’s useful, and are keen to hear any feedback

Thanks again so much to @tashtc.bsky.social for all of her hard work creating this video series ✨

That really helps me understand the difference in perspectives from the 'inside' vs the 'outside'. Sounds like an awesome and very frustrating space to be working in
miriforbes.bsky.social
So when those discussions are characterised by hostility or condescension it shapes my understanding of the culture in that space.

I don't mean to belabour the point, but wondered if that's a key disconnect when we talk about 'tone' in OS - the published papers aren't the problem in my experience.
miriforbes.bsky.social
Well said, thanks Don.

I think the only point I'd push back on is that I'd say twitter/social media *is* real life in my book - those are the voices of (an unrepresentative sample of) our peers and colleagues. I reckon 90% of my exposure to discussions and norms around OS have been on social media.
miriforbes.bsky.social
I'll keep doing the work because I agree it's important, but returning to the original point: I do think a change in the tone and culture around welcoming and celebrating incremental and imperfect attempts would get more people on board
miriforbes.bsky.social
I do think it's realistic to expect that if one of my papers got wrapped up in a controversy that it would get dragged by OS people for things like insufficient preregistration, broken code, etc. even though those were good faith efforts on my part. I feel like we see that all the time.
miriforbes.bsky.social
I haven't really had negative experiences, and agree comments in the review process are mostly positive in my experience - I'm just more trying to share what it's like as someone making an effort but not on the 'inside' of open science.
miriforbes.bsky.social
If instead the culture was like 'Wow good job for trying! ✨' and 'I love seeing shitty R code shared in a Word document because it shows me people who aren't already experts in this space are trying' then I think more people might give it a go
miriforbes.bsky.social
I've also been criticised for stuff like using data I don't have permission to share when making other materials open, and teased for sharing my R code in an xlsx sheet (fair enough I guess 😅). There's just this sense that it's hard and tiring *and* I'm just going to get it wrong anyway.
miriforbes.bsky.social
In terms of being criticised - a bunch of that sense would come from my impostor syndrome from being self-taught, but also there's a lot of posting on social media around how things not done The Right Way are embarrassing or useless, which makes me self-conscious about my crappy code writing etc.

True but the badges can be a pretty high bar - I put a heap of effort into making stuff open for this paper, for example, which didn't qualify for any badges: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

I think we could use more vibes-based gold stars with a lower bar in addition to the badges.
miriforbes.bsky.social
You don't think it would? I do my best to incorporate OS principles into my work, but I do have this persistent sense I'm going to get in trouble for doing it "wrong". I'd find it less aversive if the vibe was more 'gold stars for effort'

Woohoo congratulations Josh!!

Look no further for an *excellent* overview of HiTOP! This chapter for the upcoming Oxford Handbook of Dimensional Models in Psychopathology does a fantastic job of pulling everything together.

Tam Pham is an absolute superstar and I feel very lucky to work with her ✨

I’m thinking a lot this week about my beautiful cousin Will who we lost to suicide last year. I love this article his sister Alice is featured in, which captures Will’s spirit and Alice’s love and grief.
