Trying to watch more cricket than I write about. 🏏 The next book is about Nancy Sharp [https://tinyurl.com/2736jaw4].
Worryingly, there was a match the year before his retirement when he was the only player on the field to have taken a Test wicket. It was not Essex’s most promising day.

In this scenario, rain helps.

I have not always bought into this team’s tactical wisdom, but in this case I am of the opinion they/we might as well go for it, which possibility rain is not helping.

England cricket’s relationship with outcomes is peculiarly complex. That is part of the fun.

If England fans have accepted that the run chase won’t be sustainable (because of so few wickets remaining) then depriving Aus of a 5-0 whitewash, which one grizzled Aus veteran is fond of predicting at the start of each series (though not this time, for some reason) becomes a goal in itself.

Moved on to grilled cheese now. I think I can handle just about anything the #cricket does.

It never takes long.

Small mercies. I am still trying to warm up, so I can combine despair with hot chocolate, which is not an unreasonable combination.

Little victories. The next five and a half sessions will be a real test. I have given up trying to explain why this can be so compelling: knowing you have to just hang on and hang on against all odds, not to win but simply to not lose. It's a test of character I don't think any other sport offers.

Probably less fun, though.

Alt text is great for this, and no need to delete!

Not banned In Britain. After seeing some effects in audiences and elsewhere, Kubrick bought the UK rights and then refused permission to anyone wanting to show it in the UK.

I have tried to find there cat's name on several occasions. Alas, no luck so far. Here's more on the MS Talabot.

Maybe all us retired academics can get together and start a reference/citation checking agency. Standard rate per number of citations with a bonus for each AI fake discovered, author(s) submitting the paper have to pay an otherwise refundable deposit from which the bonus is paid?

I have been known to cite a paper I had read, completely forgotten about, re-found and then been surprised to see in my draft already. But--again--it existed and I had it in my (metaphoric) possession. Wonder whatever happened to that USB stick?

First time in over a week I have been able to catch a race live. This is fun!
