So many issues stem from this fear. Particularly the fear of bodies that do not look like ours, which often manifests as transphobia (see any example of a trans woman with a penis daring to be naked in the women’s changing room). Then there’s the rise in neo-Puritan views toward nudity in movies/tv.

All to say: if this is the guy teaching film studies at an esteemed university, it’s no wonder we’re getting a bunch of shit movies made by ppl who don’t know how to craft a decent narrative. And it also signals a completion to the cinema sins-ification of modern film criticism.

inconsistent with the rest of the movie where the phantom is chucked into the river by an angry mob. Important to note about this guy is that he also smacked his head as a joke and exclaimed “bad dobby!” early on. I think that gives an indication of his level of sophistication.

the 1925 film than any other version. And it seems to be related to his view of the Phantom as an irredeemable monster who is unworthy of an act of compassion at the end. He found that original ending to be lame and thought we were lucky to have the ending we do. Yknow the one that’s tonally

And it really struck me bc he also seemed desperate to avoid mention of the adaptation most people are familiar with. He went out of his way to mention Phantom of the Paradise and claimed it’s De Palma’s best work (please) but couldn’t bring himself to mention the musical which shares more DNA w/
