i'm a very religious religion journalist. (news editor @sojo.net / writing a biography of Clarence Jordan)

i post somewhat incoherently about tennis, the WNBA, leftist politics, theology, Godzilla, photography, etc.

I know I shouldn't give it attention but it's the phrasing here, almost intentionally Christian phrasing, that ought to have triggered some element of compassion. Sadly, Walsh's God is not Christ, it's power.

gonna go with yes because of the plaque. so no i can say: "i mean they did also convict jesus. that was a pretty significant thing that happened. like i understand where you’re coming from here but they very much did convict jesus."

So when authorities say “she tried to run over an officer,” that is not a neutral description. It is a claim of intent that can be used to justify lethal force after the fact.

When the state kills first and invents the threat afterward, it is not policing, it is death squad behavior. /end

sports are so powerful and i hope more players will remember and learn from the WNBA's exertion of power for justice.

I'll take the points even though I draw a sick pleasure from it

this example might create more accessibility (though i'm not exactly sure how?) but it might also create more incentive to offload responsibility. if that offloading can't be reliable (like a calculator) i think it's going to have the capacity for more harm than good.

you make a good point that this alt text is better than a lot of users would write. but my bar isn't "better than most humans," it's "accurate alt text." and if the design or incentive of the tech doesn't push people toward oversight to create more accurate alt text, that's bad.

it just means that a large number of systems under the label of "AI" (which, as we've discussed, i find to be an overly broad and unhelpful term) are designed for people to input instruction and receive usable output (often sold as accurate) from the tech. if that isn't reliable, i find it bad.

AI is designed like a calculator right now, but it's never going to work like a calculator. i see some work being done to change the structure to maximize the possibility of human input/oversight, but not enough and i'm not confident it will win out.

it is impressive! i am not "no AI ever," i'd just argue that AI is designed (and sold) to favor a lack of oversight and human input. the structure of it creates incentive to outsource

it seems more likely to me that people come to shrug off (or because they are in a rush, skip) necessary oversight.

"The book is displayed on a shelf with other colorful books." — isn't that inaccurate?
