Words have power; speaking things aloud gives them weight. Particularly in a culture where story and song used to be the primary means of passing on information. And I may carry the weight lightly, but I still carry it.

That liminal state where on a logical level I'd say, of course I don't believe in fairies, in the way of "Clap your hands for Tinkerbell." But at the same time I wouldn't purposely piss off fairies, just in case. And when yer old man tells you a story, you listen and remember just in case.

When my paternal grandmother died, dad told me he saw a bean sidhe over our house. I believed him, not on a literal level but on the gut level where I knew he felt a deep longing for home and connection. And that's hard to describe: the in-between where I don't believe but I don't disbelieve either.

I grew up in Aotearoa NZ but my dad was born and raised in Ireland. Most of his friends were Irish, many of the people he worked with were Irish, we went to the Irish Society club gatherings, we played Irish music, went to Catholic school with kids whose parents were also Irish expats.

Bishop Mariann Budde:

In the name of our G-d, I ask you to have mercy on the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families, some who fear for their lives.
