He went to Europe and played some low level professional soccer. Never what you’d call a serious player. But he started at the bottom as a coach in Germany and has built an interesting career. Everybody knows about Jesse Marsch but I regard Matarazzo as every bit as accomplished or more so.

I’m a longtime Barca fan. This team is super fun to watch, although today was weird and frustrating. As McManaman said, just not their day.

Matarazzo coached for years in the Bundesliga. Never top-level teams, but he did pretty well. Grew up in New Jersey. Played soccer at Columbia.

I will, probably. I’m a subscriber.

My comment isn’t inspired by that article alone. But I appreciate you pointing out the piece.

(You must limit comments on your posts. I wouldn’t have quote-tweeted if I could have simply replied.)

Are you watching Barca?

On a different note re that game, I was excited to see Pellegrino Matarazzo on the Real Sociedad sideline. I didn’t know he’d landed there.

My understanding is the BFIB (Biggest Frontrunners in Baseball) have checked out.

I will always wonder who the Astros were sending the Cards’ way last year, before Nolan changed his mind about going there.

I loved watching him in St Louis. We had some fun times, eh?

I’m glad to read your post. Put politics aside, indeed. Dilbert was great. Very funny, very sharp. I’m down to two comics I read in the DM Register and I miss the good strips of 20-30 years ago.

I was struck by the difference in how the Cards view Donovan (as a star) v. the way some other clubs do. (Careful choice of words by Rosenthal. “Not all clubs” can be some, many, most, numerous, a few… (??) I suspect it’s many.)

Being a team’s lone rep at the All-Star game doesn’t make one a star.

My boss at LSI. Cheers, Renee! Interesting woman. A leader.

This is very cool, Dan. I enjoy EOY book lists and you made me aware of several I hadn’t seen.

For Christmas I bought the six adults in the family books that all appeared on best-of lists. I had a great time hunting for them at Beaverdale Books and elsewhere. I might have to make that a tradition.

That is really funny. Well played, sir.

I can be slow sometimes. What is the POBO?

Not only expanded our view of characters from BB but created such tremendous characters and storylines exclusive to BCS. Completely agree it was one of the best shows ever.

Small, small, small.

At least his childish plaque(s) are poorly written, capitalized like a 4th-grader’s paper, and contain punctuation errors. I didn’t even read Obama’s beyond the first sentence. Maybe later.

This is not a criticism, but they had so many hit songs it surprised me they’re pretty much covered in a single episode.

My reaction to that map too. Come ON.

Publishing question, just out of curiosity. It has nothing to do with me personally. I have wondered about this for a while.

As a book is prepped for paperback release, do authors typically get to correct [x number of] errors that appeared in the hardcover version?
December 5, 2025 at 10:42 PM
I’ve meant to ask you, what do you do for authors? Are you an editor? I saw that The Economist named the Mahler book you worked on to its best of 2025 list.

I only knew you were a writer yourself.

I’d imagine you have gotten the same notice from the I-Cubs as I just did. They’re selling 10-game flex packs at half off (discount price $64) through Monday. And I’m very pleased to see Memphis is here for a 6-game series in May. It was weird for those two teams not to play each other in 2025.

Done. Thanks for the tip.

I’ll be the dickhead who says it’s Gram Parsons, but it’s only because I’m such a fan and he’s not as known as I think he deserves. Your tweet is touting numerous excellent things: the Stones, the wonderful 500 Songs podcast, and Gram and Ry. Cheers to you.
