What if our carefully constructed identities as academic "experts" are holding us back from reaching our full potential as mentors? What would allow a mentor to be helpful to anyone? @chronicle.com @princetonupress.bsky.social www.chronicle.com/article/how-...

Yes it is! Some of the coaching conversations I refer to in the book were ones I had with medical school faculty--researchers and clinicians. Thanks for your interest!

I wrote this book for many reasons. Maybe the best reason right now is that it's time to live out our values as academics. If those values include mentoring and preparing the next generation to navigate an uncertain future, how can we learn to be as helpful to one another as possible?

Such an important piece, @drkevinrmcclure.com. Gratitude is a powerful motivator for individuals and teams, and it's typically free! Yet saying "thank you" sincerely requires slowing down and being intentional. In work cultures where "busy bee" is the norm, there are missed opportunities galore.

Today's NYT op-ed by Jessica Grose highlights how the modern workplace is eroding the dynamics of care we used to take for granted. I see the same effects in my work supporting academic mentors. So many mentoring "fails" I witness have something to do with the mentor feeling overwhelmed or rushed.

Imagine walking into your brand-new office as a brand-new tenure-track faculty member, only to discover that a senior colleague has stolen your brand-new desk. And imagine doing something (hopefully) constructive with that story, two decades later.
