How is a single mother of a teenager faring in this economy? Just ask “Betty”. Ali Velshi checks in with an old friend - and @calebsilver.bsky.social - to break down how “out of control” costs are impacting everyday Americans. #velshi

How 'out-of-control costs' are hurting Americans & fueling the affordability crisis
Politicians across the aisle are increasingly focused on the cost of living, and according to Investopedia, affordability was the most-searched financial term of 2025. Ali Velshi and Investopedia editor-in-chief Caleb Silver pay a visit to Betty, a hypothetical working mother, to examine how affordability issues are impacting Americans. Housing costs, Silver tells Velshi, "have appreciated like no other costs," and Americans have no choice but to pay rising healthcare premiums because "it's not a want, it's an absolute need."

not that the present economic picture is rosy, but i do think that popular culture — and specifically nostalgia bait television — is a big part of the reason that our public memory of the 1970s, 1980s and even 1990s seems to miss the real economic pain that marked each of those decades.

Donald Trump blamed Republicans' big losses last week on not TALKING enough about affordability.

Pro tip: If you want to talk about affordability, you probably shouldn't be doing everything you can to make health care, groceries, and utilities MORE expensive.

Some people make you feel good. Some people don’t. If you work hard to spend time with the former and little to none with the latter, about 70% of your problems go away.

I can’t help but think today about how many young people were savaged on social media, branded as anti-semites and abandoned by their schools for daring to call for a ceasefire. I remember saying that it was the first time I can remember that calling for ceasefire was regarded as a hostile demand.

Lots of people have feelings about Harris admitting that she initially wanted to chose Buttigieg as her running mate, but ultimately choosing not to because she felt America wouldn’t choose a black woman and a gay man. But was she wrong? Because she didn’t choose him and…America wasn’t ready.

Our job is not to shutter community health centers, nursing homes and rural hospitals.

Our job is to fix a broken system and guarantee health care to all.

Earth Wind & Fire’s co-writer Allee Willis said she told the band: “We can’t leave ‘baa-dee-ya’ in the chorus. That has to mean something.’”

Maurice White replied: “No, that feels great. That’s what people are going to remember. We’re leaving it.”
