It would depend if you stress them DUN-dee and MON-trose or dun-DEE and mon-TROSE. I go for the 2nd so they would indeed be good substitutes for da-DA, da-DA, etc (must be something about place names from around there) whereas I think DUR-ham isn’t.

Oddly we just passed that too. Arbroath works better for the Pink Panther riff because the second syllable is on the beat as is the second note in the Pink Panther theme. Durham is a scotch snap because the first note of the rhythm is on the beat but shorter than the second. I don’t get out much.

IMHO UK still thinks public transport should be profitable, as opposed to it being an economic catalyst other countries treat it as. £3 in Istanbul would keep you going for days on their v. impressive integrated transport system. €0 to go back and forth across the Ij in Amsterdam.
