the city of los angeles burned in january in part because of a man who couldn’t stop generating images of burning cities on ChatGPT, and then after he lit the fire he asked if the fire he started was his fault

When a famous musical artist I don’t care about / don’t like releases a new album I simply ignore it and don’t listen to it, which apparently makes me unique in this day and age

I hate "well, what about if X was Y?" arguments, which is what this is, though slightly disguised.

Yes, my campaign to ruthlessly eliminate, for example, typos from my work, would be terrible if 'typos' were an indigenous people, and 'my work' was a landmass, but, hey, guess what?

i think it’s actually completely okay to say an algorithm is not a real person

if you're writing a sentence that sounds like eugenics but you go "oh that's fine to say because it's not a real person" (whatever that means) you may want to consider what made you okay with saying that

Wait, Tyler Cowen has been writing about how to find virgins since 2009 while he was a professor at George Mason University

Or look at their own website, because, let me just say: Wow

Why is everyone being so mean when this place is literally giving away The Secrets of Writing:
1) start with action
2) briefly familiarize the reader with your protagonist; make him/her likable or at least relatable
3) provide an obstacle for your protagonist
4) describe how your protagonist overcomes, or at least deals with, the obstacle
5) a chase scene might be desirable but not essential
6) give the reader hints as to the ending
7) provide a completely different ending than your hints

It is also important to balance the amount of dialogue to the amount of action. Too much dialogue and you are "telling" the story instead of "showing" the story.

OK sorry! I was just happy to see TimeCube referenced in the wild

Against my wishes I'm seeing a virgin on my screen right now and his name is Tyler Cowen.

Paramount is about to pay $150 million for this
New article from The Free Press

My Favorite Actress Is Not Human

“Not everyone is happy about this gorgeous innovation,” writes Tyler Cowen.

Tilly Norwood doesn’t need a hairstylist, has no regrettable posts, and if you wish to see a virgin on-screen, this is one of your better chances. That’s because she’s AI.

I liked Crescent City, too—and I’m intrigued by the D&D stuff you’re writing with John!

I saw both Crescent City books on the LibGen database, which is why I do think both were stolen…which is the weirdest way I’ve ever tried to buck up a fellow author, but we live in interesting times.

Just because it isn’t searchable on that form doesn’t mean it wasn’t taken. HMH failed to register the copyright on my second novel (but did for my first and third). Talk to your agent and find out the state of your copyrights.

Do you ever think about the fact that Wikipedia is the last good major website on the internet? You aren't bombarded with ads. It doesn't try to push video on you, and it doesn't redirect you to a scam site.

Sometimes I miss the good/bad ol’ days of “charcuterie is bourgeois” and “giving soup to neighbors is ableist” Twitter discourses, but good/bad news: we’re almost at that level here on the ‘sky:

there's no theft, the training process is inherently transformative/destructive

any law against AI would also be jurisprudence for outlawing fanfiction, fan art, "copying style" (wtv that means)

the misery incurred by the working class is how every technology works under capitalism
genAI is not "theft" in any way. genAI models do not 'contain' the images they are trained on, but rather enormous conglomerations of assembled information about millions of images; any legal or ethical framework that would consider AI art to be 'theft' of the material it's trained on would necessarily annihilate the legality of all transformative works as well as vast swathes of research methodologies that rely on similar web scrapers

if you are worried about genAI immisserating your line of work, you can and should unionize: the WGA secured sweeping protections from several proposals from the film industry that would have seen writers paid and credited less for touching up genAI scripts. after almost a year of industrial action, SAG-AFTRA just negotiated a deal that would prevent video game publishers from using AI voice replicas to replace striking voice actors.

Oh yeah, if there is one things Marxists love it is products by the most rapacious planet-destroying companies on earth run by the richest right-wing plutocrats in history.

Can you even be a socialist if you don't love Meta, Musk, and Microsoft!?!?

Sure, may I ask why such an anti-marxist position on AI art?
