Holy wow. Found out not long ago that my great grandmother died of the 1918 flu. Her husband couldn’t or wouldn’t raise the kids so my grandmother got farmed out to relatives to raise.

Yeah, in my own experience insurance wasn't the problem (oddly), it was the contractors trying to bill for stuff beyond the insurance contract price and getting nasty about it. Ultimately resolved, but not without threats to send to collections. Fun!

I tried this with a planned surgery. No one could or would give me a price. And no one could even promise I wouldn’t end up billed by a practitioner out of network somewhere along the way because of contract staff, some of whom took insurance and some of whom did not.
