As a rare RPG whose world and characters are rooted in Southeast Asian culture, aspects of FFX are understandably foreign to many players.
But with context, FFX sits beside FFXII as one of the most visually cohesive and clear in its intentions titles in Final Fantasy and inspires me to this day.

Yuna has Yevon fashion with hints of island flair, revealing her care for everyone involved. She then takes on more modern attire due to Tidus.
And finally, Seymour has Yevon fashion taken to 11, with big hair, an imposing collar, and oversized dragging robes. He's a Yevonite who is losing control.

The design of Tidus often catches flack in the West, but it's perfect.
It incorporates modern clothing elements into a mix of the revealing asymmetrical islander style with clothe and markings like followers of Yevon.
He's a bridge in the struggle while being someone foreign to the world itself.

The Al Bhed set themselves apart in this power struggle through a mix of island fashion and junkyard punk.
Holding to their own language, they're on the move with practical gear and goggles, for working on machines, modified with punk fashion to give a cohesive identity no matter where they wander.

The revealing outfits contrast with Yevon's followers, trying to push conservative covering and control upon the world.
They claim the island styles of fashion and homes are garish, while island folks love to emphasize going outside the norm with flaunted skin, gender nonconformity, and asymmetry.

A lot of choices that felt off to some Western players were honestly well done, just in ways that took some understanding. Like a lot of the clothing design and architecture.

It ceaselessly makes me happy to see a game focused on Southeast Asian cultures and a real appreciation for representing different cultures in such a diverse region. Few games get it so right, and it took a lot of love and craft to weave it all together.

Honestly I still prefer the original on CRT or through PS2 emu due to the original animation data and lighting not in the remasters, but it's still beautiful either way. So much detail.

It happens! But hey, at least you're 8 hrs into FFX, one of the games I hold dearest to my heart and love to gush about. 🥰💜
