In Darkroom Friday #9, photographer and arts educator Neil Harman describes how darkroom photography is a unique, personal and fulfilling experience for students to learn, from day one in the GCSE art classroom. Plus lots of incredible examples of students' work 📸 open.substack.com/pub/neilharm...

I am all for this anti-stigmatisation of crying in workplaces as a release, sign of frustration, expression of emotion etc. But I am also very much for workplaces that don't make you cry. This seems to be getting forgotten in our rush to share all the crying stories...

‘Plants have got all the solutions to all the world problems...’

Today we went from vertical farming to anti-malarial plants, from finding new ways to extract more valuable oil from plants to the potential of hemp farming.

A world tour in a fancy greenhouse.

A line of green crops in plastic containers in a lab, against a whitewashed wall with a tin can of what looks like plant food hanging above with a tube connecting it to the plants below. Rows and rows of potted seedlings with rainbow coloured labels, in trays along the length of a large industrial looking greenhouse. Someone in a blue lab coat reaches out to inject the leaf one of the plants on a trolley of specimens. A large industrial fridge unit, open. On each of the two shelves sit seedlings in test tubes, steadied by bright red trays.

Salts Mill, Saltaire, Bradford, UK.
A dinner plate with a line drawing of a dog on it, saying ‘Salts diner’ A view out of the window towards a tower with hills in the background. In the foreground is the Victorian factory roof of the mill. Some sort of red, weighing device of similar used in a Victorian industrial setting. It has a big white face like a clock but it isn’t. Another view of the factory roof and side of the building with hills in the background

Yes and go see the Ann Hamilton exhibition in Salts Mill while you’re there it’s brilliant.

Totally amazing Ann Hamilton exhibition at Salts Mill, Saltaire, up in the eaves of the building.Part of Bradford City of Culture 2025.
Yards and yards of cornflower blue material is draped at one end of a large industrial room with glass windows in the roof and a factory chimney in the distance. A megaphone on a stand. It’s just a picture but the megaphone spins round and plays beautiful music, there are two more in he background of this industrial space. Containers of sheep’s fleeces all piled up in a dark room. Woolly. Another part of the factory eaves, this time with some contemporary art installations of hanging furniture, lights, newspapers and cloaks hanging.

Excellent visit to @peacemuseumuk.bsky.social in Saltaire, Bradford. Thoughtful, interesting, bursting with ideas, and lots of activities for kids. ⭐️
The interior of an industrial looking building, with an entrance door to an exhibition space. Hanging above is a sign saying ‘Peace Museum.’ A great many origami birds of all colours and patterns in the foreground, with exhibition displays about peace in the background. A small child gets hands on badge-making with paper, pens and rubber stamps. Colourful banners installed with messages of peace activism on them, they hang above a small but beautiful exhibition space.

Getting ready for Plague of Angels at York Minster
The interior of york Minster looking towards the organ. There are two heavy metal style banners either side of a very grand looking organ connected to the big cathedral pipes behind…. This is going to be heavy.

The mustard. It went in the custard. And it was terrible.
@michaelrosenyes.bsky.social was not wrong.
It’s a small bowl of light yellow custard with a teaspoon of mustard in it, the offending mustard jar sits to the left. A middle aged man with more mustard than sense holds the small bowl of custard and mustard and grins The teaspoon goes in the mouth The man grimaces, clearly the mustard is not good in the custard.

On World Book Day I am mostly celebrating Winnie the Pooh and JR Moores’ boom on Paul McCartney in the 1990s @spinal-bap.bsky.social
The front cover of JR Moores, Off The Ground: Paul McCartney in the 1990s. Illustrated by a black and white photo of Macca with a guitar singing his little heart out circa 1990-something. A medium sized soft bear with a hand knitted red jumper on that looks not unlike Winnie the Pooh. Sitting on a fur rug.

In ischia you get the bus (which is chaos packed full of tourists and locals), or taxi to Aragonese Castle which is amazing, a monastery then home of a modern artist. Then at the foot of the castle you can do archeo-bio snorkelling and see Roman ruins under the water. And seafood or rabbit for tea.

Fried things not tried. But we did try them all as far as our arteries would allow.
