Just finished making my Mathsconf39 presentation. I was worried I wouldn't have enough to say, the opposite might actually be true (at least people can see the slides I miss when they get emailed out!)
Also can I just say, I've not made a PPT in over 2 years so I am quite impressed with myself.

I made the worksheet myself but was shown it at MathsConf by @blatherwicksam.bsky.social
I used the template on Mathsbot but then just added my own numbers or algebra.

I like the how many expressions can you make and evaluate. Could definitely see some students having a go where it's like a^2 + b

Both of my year 9 classes did loads of substitution work today. Got the exercise from the foundation sumbooks 2002. They are available online as a pdf. Loads of questions if the students just need loads of practice.

Year 11 looked at Magic squares today. Which leads onto factorising quadratics. Next lesson will be just factorising quadratics.
(For some reason rotating won't work)

Year 10 had a go at factorising single brackets.
I think once we have a go at factorising double brackets I might make a mixed exercise as they tend to struggle to see if they are still single factorising when you have a x^2.

Today Year 11 looked at the relationship between volumes of similar shapes. There were some nice questions in the textbook (although somehow Q1 was harder than Q2 and 3)

Tried teaching my year 9s how to use a calculator properly today (and not use the on button to remove your current calculation)
It is complete and utter muscle memory for me, and I found myself doing it multiple times in the lesson accidentally.

I think the reduction helped, less time trying to spot the answer and since they had glued in the first 2 columns before working on the 3rd the 3rd ended up going quite quick.

Year 8 have been doing this Improper Fraction and Mixed Fraction matching task today from MrWhy1089 on TES. Did this with 2 groups, first cut out everything, second only did diagrams and improper fractions to begin with. The second group ended up completing more overall.

My ELC group looked at shading fractions. After learning from last year they got more practice before we did the worksheets.

Year 10 found expressions for shaded areas.
Made this last year for an extension but it was nice spending a bit longer on it.

Year 10 started expanding multiple single brackets and collecting the like terms. Did much better then expected :D next lesson they get to do some of my favourite tasks with it. (To be shared then)

We did! Did also really lead on well on why we have the procedure method due to it becoming quite hard to tell with certain fractions.

Personal preference with low ability students.
I see the benefit and prefer that with my higher students, but with really weak students I prefer this.

Year 8 looked at equivalent fractions today and found which of the 2 fractions were larger.

I think as they can get confused with probability trees or frequency trees. I have no issue with them but I know some people do.
