Hi everyone

Here is this week's blog, centred around the consequences of dumbing down your Tier 2 and 3 words with students. Enjoy and please share if you find it useful!

Year 8 finished their section on simplifying expressions ending with adding x^2 types to the mix. They also got to do some finding expressions of perimeter questions.

Last week was tough so definitely need to look for some positives #weeklywins
- Full completion of homework from a group where previous week only 2 completed it.
- Surprisingly good understanding of AER in #coremaths, seems I’ve finally convinced them of the benefits of using percentage multipliers

Any more #WeeklyWins to round things off? (Also because I'm miffed that my hashtag has been repurposed by trading accounts)

#WeeklyWins has to be seeing my year 9s tackling percentage increase/decrease and reverse percentages with multipliers. Some of them arrived in y7 not knowing number bonds to 10 - seeing how far they've come is so rewarding.

Friday was that manic I forgot to actually post my #WeeklyWins 😂

● Y9s doing really well with scatters

● Getting Y7s to realise that fractions are so much better than formula triangles for compound measures (take that science dept!)

● got my retakes through their first L2 6 marker

Keep posting!

#WeeklyWins I set revision cover for my year 12 FM class (thanks @drbennison.bsky.social for the revision clock/videos). They were free to do the work wherever they liked. One of the students sent me some photos of lots of them working in the classroom together ‘locked in’ using the big whiteboards

#weeklywins I raided physics and used actual equipment to teach moments to my year 13s and it worked well! #alevelmaths

Today was the best Friday period 5 lesson I’ve had with my Y8s all year. They worked really hard and it felt like a nice calm end to the day. #WeeklyWins

#WeeklyWins because I need positivity after that yr 9 double....

One of my yr 13s found 2 marks I'd missed, moving him up to a B!

My yr 11 borderline class can factorise non monic quadratics and dubbed it "actually quite easy"

What lovely weather!

Start to think of those #WeeklyWins people, I suspect we're going to need them!

In #mathstoday I braved using algebra tiles to solve equations. Not sure of success, but looking forward to watching students playing around with more equations tmrw.

I was giving back mock papers in #MathsToday. I regretted reusing this slide from last year when a decent number of them started sniggering at my choice of grades. Apparently even Y11 still find this funny!

I love this idea as it forces me to think of good stuff rather than <generally panicking>

1) A couple of my yr13s have had their hard work pay off massively
2) I feel like I’ve improved how I teach risk in AQA Core Maths 2B compared to last year
3) My year 9 group ask brilliant insightful questions
Right, off the back of yesterday, decided to bring something back from early Edusky, #WeeklyWins

Share your wins, however big or small, that got you through the week.

Mine:

● Entry 3 student getting 90% in a mock
● Y10s really stepping up
● Exciting trip updates

Happy Friday, all!

My borderline yr 11 stomped algebraic fractions today. Told me it was easy. Even with binomial numerators and denominators. And my bottom 9s told me factorising quadratics was easy. #MathsToday #WeeklyWins

Worst day I've had in quite a while.

If this term has sucked, please know you are not alone, you shouldn't feel bad for your frustration, but you're good enough to get through this!

Always look for 3 positives, however small.

● 8 set 3 did amazing work
● on top of admin
● had a lovely pupil convo
