During our #MathsConf39 session, Jason and I revealed our new project: The History and Maths in Education Network (historyand.mathsy.space) which aims to facilitate discussion and sharing of resources & ideas amongst folks interested in using history themes to enrich maths education.

Thank you for attending, hoping at least some of it was worth the long trek down the corridor 😂

That I did. At some point I will reconstruct the cube 😂

Shout out to @joausten.bsky.social and @rjs2212.bsky.social for some really great sessions too: the former being a deep dive into number sense with stuff that translates really well to secondary, and the latter being what I can only describe as a tsunami of maths activities

Fantastic Mathsconf today. @morrismaths359.bsky.social particularly knocked it out of the park. Hope those who came to my session on Significance and Standard Form got something from it. It will be making its way in parts to Substack soon 😊

Always fascinating to get a window on how other people teach specific topics; like this from @jwrightmaths.bsky.social in session 3 #MathsConf39
“How I teach standard form
It’s all about place value
No between 1 and 10, it’s all about significance.
Introduce with number sentences.
Give a chance to talk indices early on.
Can use counting as a back up, but not the primary way so number of zeros errors happen less often”

Both of my year 9 classes did loads of substitution work today. Got the exercise from the foundation sumbooks 2002. They are available online as a pdf. Loads of questions if the students just need loads of practice.

In #MathsToday (and yesterday) Y7 just have a baseline test, so I've given them a nice, silly starter
A starter screen asking students to estimate the number of televisions on Earth, giving reasons for their answer.

In #mathstoday, we started conic sections in FP1 with some model-making!

Year 11 looked at Magic squares today. Which leads onto factorising quadratics. Next lesson will be just factorising quadratics.
(For some reason rotating won't work)

#MathsToday I had to talk to students (again) about why trusting AI to do their homework is not a good idea. 2nd time I have caught it out in a week.
#Maths teachers using online hwk platforms, what do you do about this?

#MathsToday was the first ratio lesson of the year with my bottom set 10s.

Used models for all the classic question types, lots of nice progress (well, by P5/6 double standards anyway 😂)

Right, this week begins a series on what is a very contentious issue. I do not profess to have the ultimate answer, but here I begin to discuss the language of Order of Operations. Please feel free to discuss here or there!
