Wisdom, moral imagination, an enlarged sympathy for those who live or have lived differently from yourself. This is what you get from studying the Humanities. So quite important, actually.

I once did a continental European viva: large panel of examiners, room full of candidate’s colleagues, family & friends. 2 hours in, a panel member on Teams (unwittingly) nearly reduced me to hysterics: camera pointing at his ear; he rose & sank in his seat throughout his report, seemingly unaware.

I was just in a Teams meeting with a colleague who'd just got a new standing desk and kept accidentally hitting the controls to change its height, and when she did she'd slowly vanish from the screen like she was in a lift and it really made my day 🤣🤣🤣

So the church (C of E, anyway) has finally caught up with the very first moments of Christianity as a faith, in which women were the first witnesses and teachers.

Yes and take a flask of hot honey and lemon with you. I find drinking something warm/hot in pauses as you speak really helps (not cold water).

Terrific article by Richard Ovenden: energetic advocacy for the goods of public libraries (& a challenge to tech giants’ claims to offer free access to unlimited information). I’ll always be grateful that my local library allowed me to explore widely in my reading as a child.

'Our public libraries are free in three critical senses. Firstly, they cost nothing to join and to use. Secondly, they are open to all in our communities. We must also add a third concept of freedom: the freedom to read – to engage, without restraint, a diversity of knowledge and opinion'.
Libraries are palaces for the people. Their ramparts need...
The spirit of inquiry that led to Britain’s first public library opening its doors 173 years ago needs to be rekindled

This is all made possible by an Exeter Arts and Culture Fellowship that brought Chris Hoban and I together to explore creative approaches to historic wills.

Read more about what we got up to in this blog post: sites.exeter.ac.uk/materialcult...
A group of five photographs, the first two show Laura Sangha and Chris Hoban talking to a seated audience, Chris plays guitar and accordian. One shows two workshop attendees transfering designs onto squares of lino. Another shows two attendees working on their linocuts, the final photo shows a person applying ink to the surface of their linocut.

Hearing aids are also much more effective if you start using them sooner rather than later, and deafness, if you’re not part of the Deaf community, is isolating. (Which may help explain the dementia business, but the isolation is miserable even if it doesn’t affect you that way).

What if there is a tech device that will substantially decrease your risk of dementia?

My new blog post. And yes, I have started using this device.

(Hearing aids. Hearing loss is strongly associated with dementia risk. Hearing aids solve things.)

‘analysis of the [graduate] wage premium… by leading… economists determined it was “extraordinarily flat” between the 1990s & 2010s, despite a near tripling in the share of working adults with an undergraduate degree over the period.’
