I spent the summer reporting this essay on why it seems harder than ever to sell a book right now—especially if it isn't a debut and comes with the dreaded "sales track." I'm grateful to the writers, agents, editors, publishers & experts who spoke to me for this piece: thewalrus.ca/the-publishi...

Book 43 of 2025: THE COVER GIRL by @mossyair.bsky.social. Spent half the day in bed finishing this gut-punch of a novel about a teen model in the 1970s and her relationship with a much older rockstar—and her gradual, painful realization that “relationship” is the wrong word. What a debut! 📚👀
The cover of Amy Rossi’s novel THE COVER GIRL, featuring snapshots of a young woman, some circled for keeping and others crossed out, all stop a bright blue background.

i will admit my seeding was rushed, which likely played a part. also starting with 16 meant avoiding a fettuccine vs linguine debate. (our regions were line, tubes, twists, and fun.)

I just don’t want “film a video and hope it goes viral” to be a “reasonable” expectation of authors!! I hate being on video! I am too awkward for video!

When I left Boston to get my MFA, I wrote a letter to my favorite bookstore and thanked them for helping me find my way back to writing. Maybe I’ll come back and do a reading one day, I added.

It only took 12 years.

If you’re in the area, join me on 9/3!
