Thing that we didn't discuss, but occurred to me on listening back to this: this movie about misogyny predates Gamergate by 1 year, and Trump's first term by 3. Given the state of the misogynosphere at the time of its creation, it looks kinda prescient in retrospect....

On tonight's pod I talk to the wonderful @rossthesedays.bsky.social about Denis Villeneuve's 2013 movie "Enemy". This is a really good one, yo! We get deep into it because this film is a Rich Text and there is a LOT to say.
Listen here: bit.ly/res_rec-83-e..., older eps at mpr.nz/show/reserved.
An image of Jake Gyllenhaal from the DVD box of the movie "Enemy" (2103) which shows a cityscape dominated by an enormous spider growing from the back of his head. Over this is superimposed text which reads "Reserved Recommendations #83: "Enemy" (2013) with Ross Palethorpe"

This morning on the Morning Show, @objectivereality.bsky.social caught up with Andy (aka Andwahn) and Ce from Synthetic Children to talk about their shiny new "Joint Venture " EP.

Listen here: bit.ly/morning_show..., and get the EP here: andwahn.bandcamp.com/album/joint-...
The cover of the EP "Joint Effort" by Andwahn and Synthetic Children. It's a hand-drawn image that shows an alien monster holding an LP record with a massive grin on its face.

Local Election 2025: ENM Meet The Candidates (Horizons Regional Council) - Lucky Dip questions
The Meet The Candidates event was held at the Globe Theatre by Environment Network Manawatū on 09/09/25. This event was for candidates standing for Horizons Regional Council. In this section, candidates answer questions drawn at random from a basket. Find a podcast of the full event at www.mpr.nz/show/elections TIMESTAMPS 01:19 Do you support ratepayer money going into the biodiversity grant scheme that Horizons already runs? 03:46 Flood protection tends to rely on hard engineering structures without regard for aquatic biodiversity. How could Horizons integrate biodiversity into flood protection works? 05:36 Do you believe Horizons has a role in improving safety for cyclists and walkers? 06:29 What are the most pressing policy challenges facing Horizons? 07:29 How do you rationalise balancing the quality of water in the Manawatū river with the need to discharge effluent into it from the populations living alongside it? 08:32 How will you approach the challenge of including long term strategic thinking in an environment where elected representatives are often rewarded for shiny short-term achievements? 10:51 What could Horizons do better to deliver better environmental outcomes? 11:40 When setting budgets, how do you justify setting plans that may increase rates? 13:05 What role do you see Horizons have in enhancing and protecting biodiversity? 14:19 How will Horizons deliver on its climate change, sustainability, biodiversity, transport, and Manawatū River plans, all in a limited funding environment? 15:54 What is your understanding of the difference between climate adaptation and climate mitigation? 17:11 What are your views on the use of 1080? 18:53 Transport is the biggest contributor to emissions - how can Horizons increase bus use? 20:29 There is a lot of change on the horizon coming from central government. How can Horizons be prepared for these changes? 23:51 Do you think Horizons should support predator-free initiatives in Palmerston North, and what mechanism should they use to do this? 25:03 "The economy is a fully-owned subsidiary of the environment, not the other way around." Discuss. 29:21 Do you think Horizons has a role in the eradication of plastics that end up in landfill or our waterways? 30:36 Can the electric buses be made free for all, to help control emissions? 33:24 We don't have soft plastic recycling in Palmerston North. Why is this, and how can it be changed? 34:07 Why aren't there young people standing as candidates for local government elections? 35:43 How can we improve the health and water quality of our waterways? 37:13 How important is the joint climate action plan, and what priority would you give to ensuring the identified actions are resourced and implemented? 37:55 What role can ENM have in supporting Horizons' objectives? 39:58 Environmental protection is a science-based job - how do you make the best decisions with limited knowledge? 41:41 Why should Palmerston North Ratepayers contribute to the Sustainable Land Use Initiative? 45:13 From your campaigning experience, what are the most important issues from the people you have talked to, and are environmental issues on that list? 46:40 Without money, we cannot protect our environment well - how do you see this statement? 48:11 What do you think is the biggest environmental challenge facing our region?

Local Election 2025: ENM Meet The Candidates (PNCC) - Lucky dip questions
The Meet The Candidates event was held at the Palmerston North Leisure Centre by Environment Network Manawatū on 27/08/25. This event was for candidates standing for the Palmerston North city Council and Te Pūao Māori Ward. In this section, candidates drew questions to answer from a basket. There was also a system of "wild cards" to allow candidates to jump in on a question they really wanted to answer. Find a podcast of the full event at www.mpr.nz/show/elections TIMESTAMPS 01:55 How do you balance the needs and expectations of today's voters with those of generations to come? 03:18 How will you approach the challenge of incorporating long-term strategic thinking in an environment where elected representatives are often rewarded for shiny short-term objectives. 06:28 What are some things Council can do with its parking policies to increase patronage of public transport? 13:34 To what extent is recycling the answer to reducing waste? 15:54 Transportation is the biggest contributor to city emissions - what will you do to make cleaner modes of transport more attractive so emissions can be reduced? 18:00 The endless quest for growth is unsustainable, what do you think of the concept of degrowth? 19:36 Do you support the development of natural burial options in the Palmerston North area, and what will you do to ensure this happens? 21:40 What are your views on the use of 1080? 26:10 What would you do to improve the safety of cyclists and walkers in the city? 29:57 How can we improve the health and quality of our waterways? 31:34 What are your thoughts on how PNCC can transition from neoliberal, ecocidal growth narratives to a resilient, community-centric model? 35:00 What is the value of developing a community-focused city-wide climate action plan? 42:03 What is your stance on central government directives to focus on growth, including housing developments and expansions, when our systems are already at capacity? 45:39 What is council's role in helping to address the overwhelming prevalence of plastics in our landfill, public places, and lives? 47:43 What role can Environment Network Manawatū play in supporting council's objectives? 48:52 What is the value of water bodies in urban areas? 50:19 An observation has been made that there are more trees planted in wealthier areas of the city. Where do you see evidence of inequity within our city and what do you think could be done about it? 52:03 There is a lot of change on the horizon coming from central government, which impacts local government. How can council be prepared for these unknown changes? 54:21 What priority would you give to ensuring climate plan actions are resourced and implemented? 55:44 I would like to know when the cycle track to Ashhurst will be completed. I would like to cycle it without riding on the main road. 56:57 Do you support bolstering the range of responsible recycling and composting options in Palmerston North? If so, how would you progress this?
