🔬 It’s Day 4 of #FungalWeek25 focusing on histoplasmosis, a common but underdiagnosed fungal infection in the Americas.

Researchers at the MRC CMM LATAM Unit are studying:
🌳 Environmental factors
🧫 Fungal biology & virulence
🛡️ Immune response & susceptibility

To improve outcomes for communities.

🦠 Fungi that jump from cats to humans? Yes, really.

Sporothrix brasiliensis is spreading in Latin America, causing painful infections & showing #AMR.

The FAILSAFE project, led by @MRC_CMM & funded by #GAMRIF, is supporting vital research to tackle this threat.

Fungi can be found everywhere. People can get fungal diseases from contact with an infected animal, skin scrapes that are exposed to fungi in dirt or plants, and from breathing fungal spores in the air.

Diagnostic tests ensure patients are given the correct treatment. A new lateral flow test developed by Professor Chris Thornton can detect Mucormycosis much faster than current diagnostic techniques & could be commericalised within 3 years #FungalWeek25 buff.ly/dsJoRyd..

🔬 #imageoftheweek ¦ Timelapse of Aspergillus fumigatus shows SecP004 (mScarlet-tagged) localising to the hyphal tip. The cell wall is stained with calcofluor white.

Researchers think SecP004 may mediate secretion of stress/virulence proteins & could be a target for treatment.
