The fire might have started via a towel touching a heating element. Police are investigating the deaths as a case of corporate manslaughter brought about by negligence.

東京・赤坂のサウナ室で夫婦が死亡した火事で、発生当時、非常ボタンの通報を知らせる装置の電源が入っておらず、サウナのオーナーも「今まで電源を入れたことがない」と話していることがわかりました。

Luckily they live far enough inland that tsunamis don’t pose a threat to them. My only concern, aside from structural integrity, is fire as they still use kerosene heaters, which came in handy in 2011 when most homes have switched to electric for heating while my relatives keep it old school. 3/

Since then, I haven’t heard from them on the count of them having to go to work, but I’m hoping to talk to them soon to find out if they had the chance to assess the damage, if any, to their homes. 2/
