Jewellery can be confiscated from refugees to pay for processing them, as one minister gleefully told the press—seemingly blissfully unaware of the horrific echoes such a despicable policy conjures up.

Using the word "philistine" to mean "uncultured person" is pretty racist when you think about it. Philistine was a whole country with, I'm sure, a variety of people.

Imagine if in 1000 years "American" was a word meaning "idiot". Well ok...that would make sense. Bad example, but you get the idea.

The "last chance" for centrism was quite a while ago and the solution these stuck records are going to try of trying to out migrant-bash the fascists was one of the things that killed it.

Her argument seems to be....the economic turmoil was the result of factors over which Truss had “no control”.

If the prime minister has no control over the economy, my question is:

What's the point of governments?

Answers on a postcard, please.

Sometimes the poor are praised for being thrifty. But to recommend thrift to the poor is both grotesque and insulting. It is like advising a man who is starving to eat less.

Fantastic news to wake up to that Assad's reign is finally over, the speed of it has been incredible. The risk now is the power vacuum will give rise to new tyranny - and that Syria's Kurds will find themselves in the firing line of whatever replaces the dictatorship.
