I find that it’s not so much “we’ve got an audience” but “how do we corral and trap our audience so they don’t go elsewhere”

Audiobook editor here… sometimes I’m editing books narrated by the reader alone in their own studio and “clap edits” are incredibly useful (though many readers now have a little clicker).

But choosing only works if you *know* how you want to feel. What if you’re depressed? What if you can’t choose? Can’t summon the will?

Then having a huge menu of options isn’t comforting, it’s paralysing. You need something to already be playing.

Incidentally, I heard the AI Garland and my thought was ‘she’s a really dull actor’. You don’t want the voice, you want the mind and AI can’t do that.

Yet.

I’m an audiobook editor. Someone showed me an AI voice generator. Now, this could be useful fixing misreads (could/would) at a digital level, seamlessly keeping the feel of the original take. But no, they want to resurrect Judy Garland.

There's a moment in the latest Knives Out film that makes this point.

There’s a feeling about it that they didn’t quite know what they had, but knew it was worth documenting. I love Phil Collins describing how he wants his drums to sound.

I always liked the painting on the modern life cover sitting on the tube in stupid DMs. Somewhere between these two.
