We know more about the massive military-style raid on a Chicago housing complex thanks to the reporting of @southsideweekly.bsky.social, @blockclubchi.bsky.social, and neighborhood resident Eboni Watson who chronicled the event. Among the emerging questions: what's real estate's role in this?

section of text from South Side Weekly's coverage, which says: "The building was purchased by Wisconsin-based investor Trinity Flood in January 2020, according to Cook County records. On October 1, the day after the raid, a judge reviewed an emergency motion from Wells Fargo seeking to appoint Matthew Tarshis of Frontline Real Estate Partners as the property’s receiver.

Flood purchased three multifamily properties in South Shore in 2020. The neighborhood, which had the highest number of eviction filings in Chicago from 2015-2019 according to the Law Center for Better Housing, has seen a rise in outside real estate investors since the 2017 announcement of the Obama Presidential Center’s construction in the neighboring Jackson Park.

Wells Fargo Bank foreclosed on the building in mid-2024, bringing a $27 million lawsuit against Flood for missed loan payments. In late 2024, the City began closing its largest migrant shelters and, through state funding assistance distributed via Catholic Charities and moving support from New Life Church, relocated many families to buildings such as this one."

I never thought the shelter plan was going to work, but it's all the more essential now, considering the assault that Portland is facing, that the Mayor change course and do what's necessary to protect the people we've already profoundly failed. His legacy is on the line.

We need bold action that will actually make up for years of housing underproduction, so that everyone has a permanent place to live. Unlock a massive building boom that will fuel a new era of growth in Portland.

The Mayor also needs to bring a significant housing production package to Council for approval. City staff has prepared a ton of ideas in last year's Housing Production Strategy, but the things actually implemented continue tinkering around the edges.

He should ask the Council for authorization to spend a significant chunk of remaining funds from the shelter plan to help PHB and Home Forward purchase more multifamily properties currently for sale at low prices.

Another one of the Mayor's strengths is his management background - he should be hands on with the new County COO and JOHS to get things managed more effectively and urgently. Things move way too slowly there, and there's no way to do this without the County.

Neighborhood pushback has been one of the biggest barriers to the pod villages that have been shown to be the best path out of homelessness. The Mayor should apply his resolve to a better solution: rapidly expand the villages. Leverage the unified City structure to get them permitted quickly.

We definitely don't give law enforcement more license to harass them.

What I've found most admirable about the Mayor's work so far is his willingness to stand firm against NIMBYs.

This approach forces people who already don't know a moment's peace to live on their feet, staying moving all day after they've been booted from the night shelters at 6am.

We've poured millions of dollars in a budget crisis into somehow making their lives even worse.

I believe Mayor Wilson is fundamentally a compassionate man. What we will soon learn is whether he's one that can admit and own his mistakes: night shelters + campaign ban were never going to help people.

As federal goons flood into Portland, there is no worse time for Mayor Wilson to be restarting enforcement of the City's so-called camping ban. Those who are the victims of failed housing and health policies are the most vulnerable to the ICE predators that are increasingly roaming our streets.

This administration works non-stop to undermine the housing security of immigrants and minorities, from essentially halting fair housing law enforcement to pressuring landlords for tenant information.

Then, they villainize, harass, and persecute those living on the streets.

Every day, some new horror. Building management at the Chicago apartments either coordinated with the feds on clearing out the building, or just took advantage of it and turned it into a militarized eviction raid.

Housing justice has gotta be a key pillar in our response to accelerating fascism.

I agree that it’s a difficult problem, and there’s no perfect decision. But when a far-right oligarch directly controls the algorithm, it’s not a free and open marketplace.

IMO, we should be more focused on undermining and disrupting it and the role it plays.

I can't stop thinking about this. We're pursuing zero fire risk in multifam, while tolerating much more in single-fam. People respond by building and living in single-fam, where they're exposed to not only one of the highest fire death risks in the developed world, but also TONS more car crash risk

this is wild: while Stephen Miller's guy was in Minnesota for his uncle's funeral, somebody was able to see his entire phone and take pictures of his Signal group chats talking about military deployments to Portland, and brought them to the Strib (gift link: www.startribune.com/trump-offici...)

In that situation, you emerge from your warm, safe home and have a conversation with the person who is going through the worst time in their life about what resources they need to get back on their feet. The person with a home is not a victim in this situation.
