I don't know about you, but I get soaked when I shower my client. I saw those wristbands many people use when washing their face, and I tried them out. I highly recommend picking some of these up if showering is part of your caretaking responsibilities.

Did you know?

Many individuals with autism thrive in structured, predictable environments.

Keeping things routine and communicating any expected changes are great ways to help those who benefit from this structure.

#SundayReset

On Sunday, my brother and I reset the house. He has favorite chores he likes to do, such as unloading the dishwasher and taking out the trash.

It's essential to embrace your client's or loved ones' interests and help them develop independence when possible.

If you're a caregiver of someone in need of noise or enviornment management I recommend keeping a list of places and their reaction.

For example, the T-Mobile store and our local game store are places my client will not go, so I will wait with him while my husband or someone else goes in.

#AcceptanceTuesday

Sometimes, it is really hard, and that is okay. It's important to let yourself express those feelings. We know you care for your clients/loved ones, but taking care of yourself is essential. Write or talk out those feelings.

If my brother isn't sure where something goes, he invents a place. This can make it challenging to find our stuff. One idea is to create some open bins in areas where this happens. We store some of our cooking tools in clear, open containers to help with this.

Many people with autism communicate emotions differently, but they still feel them deeply.

People often ask how we communicate with my nonverbal brother. We learned his behaviors and routine and his likes and dislikes like anyone else.
