February 6th, 2025 "I didn't think we could just sit here idly and say, 'Let those people die'. We wouldn't want the rest of the world to say that about us if we were in the same situation... Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you." -Governor Robert Ray Senators Grassley and Ernst, Representatives Feenstra, Hinson, Miller-Meeks, and Nunn, Last week we learned that refugee resettlement program funding was unilaterally cut without notice by Presidential Executive Order. This order immediately suspends funding for these legal, thoroughly vetted refugees who are here in the state and still in their first 90 days. As you are aware, when our country agrees to accept refugees, we commit to providing 90 days of basic needs assistance and staff support. Federal assistance is barely $18 per day for basic needs. We cannot take this vital support away from refugees when they need it most. Right now, 891 refugees in lowa (of whom 445 are children) who are still in their first 90 days are now without any of the promised federal assistance. Refugee Resettlement Programs are scrambling to provide food, housing, and staff support without any funding. They are forced to lay off case workers. lowa cannot abandon these refugees in their time of greatest need. We are asking you as lowans: please do not turn your backs on these vulnerable people. In memory of Governor Robert Ray, honor our country's commitment to refugees and stand up for lowa values. As your constituents we expect you to stand up for your power as the duly elected legislative branch. We call on you to immediately restore funding for refugees here in lowa.
