Heceta Head Lighthouse near Florence, OR. All lighthouse locations are scenic, but this one is among the best. Not sure which angle does it the most justice. #watercolor #gouache #artyear

I’ve wanted to paint this scene for a long time, but I couldn’t work out everything for watercolor — so I did it in gouache. This is the first time I’ve used that medium for an entire painting. I’m pleased with the way it handled and will do more in gouache. #gouache #watercolor

Mt. Hood from Timothy Lake. One of our favorite spots to camp. Shot the reference photo from Hoodview Campground. Can you tell I’m gearing up for a long camping trip to Oregon? #artyear #watercolors

Moose, attempts 1, 2 & 3. @laurag.bsky.social posted about 4 renditions of a painting, so I’m giving it a shot. #artyear #watercolor

Sprague Lake moose, No. 2. I just read another post where the artist said she makes 4 renditions of a painting. I’ve found myself doing 2 attempts of many works. Generally, I’m more pleased with the second version, although there’s always something I like better in the original. #artyear #watercolor

Retired 40 days ago and the goal is to create a new piece every day (or at least work on a new piece). This is the progress from Day 3 to Day 40. #ArtYear #watercolor

If you’ve been to Roscoe, MT, just up the East Rosebud, you know this bar. Shown is the final piece and the studies that went into it. I used washes of Cobalt blue, Alizarin crimson and Cadmium yellow to make for a more luminous grizzly.

Worked hard on a concept last week, and … every variation looked like 💩. Returned to doodles today, wanting to play with simple colors and a common watercolor technique. Much more pleased. Simple, simple, simple. #ArtYear

Yesterday’s piece, from a trail at Iowa’s Ledges State Park. Trying to scratch my artistic itch after a 30-year absence. #ArtYear

Surprising amount of prep work for a 4 x 6, essentially black and white (Payne’s Gray, actually) piece. I am usually attracted to colors, but the stark photo I took for this piece has always resonated. #watercolors

After a 30-year layoff, I’m finding time to paint nearly every day in retirement. The goal is a 4 x 4 every day, hoping the skill, techniques and creativity come back. #watercolors
