🚨New pre-print with @versteegenluca.bsky.social and @mtsakiris.bsky.social on emotions and polarization ⬇️ We often intuitively think that affective polarization (AP) is about strong negative emotions, e.g. fear & loathing. But how do citizens actually feel? Spoiler: not as negative as assumed!

🚨Pre-print alert🚨

Research shows citizens in many Western democracies are increasingly affectively polarized––they feel warm toward their own party but quite cold toward opposing parties.

But how does it feel to “feel warmly”?
@katharinalawall.bsky.social, @mtsakiris.bsky.social & I asked.

20 years ago, with P Haggard we revisited the rubber hand illusion in a paper at JEP:HPP. 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the journal & we were honoured to be invited to re-revisit our original paper for this anniversary issue psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?d...

Such a pleasure working with @neuroirena.bsky.social & @pollydalton.bsky.social on if and how cardiac signals impact attentional control 👇

No effect of cardiac signals on conflict resolution, but evidence for systolic enhancement of phasic alerting 🫀🧠

In previous work with Manos Tsakiris @mtsakiris.bsky.social , we showed that interoception can act as a buffer against political stress. We now extend this research to the 2024 U.S. Presidential elections, capturing data before and after

Focal brain damage effects on political behaviour, not on ideology. Political involvement was more intense after lesions to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex & posterior precuneus, less intense after lesions to the amygdala and anterior temporal lobe

Very proud of this excellent research led with great care, expertise and vision by @olafborghi.com as part of his Ph D for the www.ippad.eu project on adolescence and politics. Well done Olaf !

In politics, people are not always truth seekers. Often, we reach conclusions because they fit with preferred political narratives: we are biased by ideological motivations. But are some people better equipped to overcome such bias than others? 🚨 Find out in the first pre-print from my PhD 🚨

@jburnmurdoch.ft.com from @financialtimes.com shows that Trump’s America and his supporters are a stark outlier from western Europe and the rest of the Anglosphere. In many cases, the Maga mindset is much closer to that of Vladimir Putin’s Russia or Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s Turkey.

Thank you Masud for giving voice to the thoughts that many of us have. There are horror stories to share about travel agents contracted by universities. They cost more money & time as you say, and they often put at risk colleagues, especially women, who found themselves in dangerous situation

On emotions and politics, I often think that the core emotion that democracies should aim to protect us from is fear. Democracies should primarily enable us to live free from fear. More on Friday 31/01 👇| philosophy.sas.ac.uk/news-events/...
