I'm finally reading Erotic Vagrancy and I kept trying to think of what it reminds me of. Finally I got there - it's like Peter Ackroyd's massive biography of London. It has a similarly discursive yet obsessively detailed feeling, which I find very enjoyable.

I remember seeing the Piltdown Man skull as a kid (at the Natural History Museum) and my dad explaining what a hoax was. I was most struck however by how the skull looked like a peanut with the skin on. I didn’t realise it was a reconstruction, I must have been too small to be able to read the label

Sorting through some old photos I found this, which I am always as startled to see as I was when we actually saw it.

(On the way to the Dursey Island cable car in Co Cork. I don't know if it's still there. Let's hope not.)
It's a little fella made from concrete. He's sitting on a bench and has three very damaged dogs (?) with him. Whoever painted this ensemble only had access to red paint and white paint. He has patched trousers and a beard. His coat is pink, his boots and hat and trousers and cheeks are red. The biggest dog has red eyebrows, all three dogs have red paws. It's a very grey damp day.

It's quite a climb up here, through the dark damp woods, but well worth it.

A fine autumn day. This is a five-stone circle (the stones are not large, maybe knee to waist height) with a stone row adjacent, the large stone in the photo (about 2.5m) is part of the row. The views are stunning, across to Killmakilloge Harbour and Knockatee mountain. There's another circle about 70m away, and the mediæval road from Kenmare to Castletownberehaven can be seen to the north.

I just did a bit more research, they were called Gorge Cafes I think - the one in Reading is in fact still there. Here's a pic from Trip Advisor showing the fake cave ceiling!

An ‘elf on the shelf’ branded erasable message board, you know, where you write on the surface with a stylus and pull the tab thing to erase it so you can write another message. Very low tech, seemed like magic in the 70s. Anyway, someone (a teenager I’m guessing) has written ’hello you cunt!’ on it. Classic.

when I was young my dad told me that knee socks had been a fashion thing in the mid-sixties and quite attractive. I thought this was a weird concept. Some time later I saw pics from this photo session and everything made sense.
It's 1964. It's B&W. It's Marianne Faithfull in a pub - a shiny London gin palace I assume, with button-backed dralon banquettes and a massive ashtray on the table - in a frock with knee socks and strappy shoes.

I absolutely adore Soft Cell and should make more effort with his solo work. I loved the suff he did as The Grid.

We saw Soft Cell several times in recent years - here's a terrible pic from when they did the whole of Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret which was marvellous.

Archie had hyperthyroidism, but the medicated food they put him on sorted it out. (Supportive pic of Archie in case that helps.)
