Should firms be centralised? Should divisions of an org have complete or zero autonomy?

The answer according to Stafford Beer is that neither extreme works.

But there are people who fight about this due to their own ambition.

This rings true in education discourse too.

Then tying it all together!

Last point so important. Assessment is not an adjunct.

5 macro assessments in KS3.

More in KS4.

LOADS of micro knowledge tests.

Then minute by minute knowledge checks (understandably less animation!)

Macro assessments!

We need to think about what these communicate.

Prompting. “Yes, but…”

Ensuring opportunities for independent practice.

Live marking - absolute game changer.

Thinking about focus - always a challenge question.

Assessment happens in a micro level, every lesson every day.

Top three are very close, though.

@drchendrick.bsky.social approved graphs.

And the answer is….

Quick quiz….

But do need to unthread.

What is the core content required? What is the minimum?

No child should miss out because they have a different teacher.

What does good curriculum design look like?

Knowledge latches onto knowledge.

Build this in early, don’t need to tease out subject literacy later.

How can we fit in general knowledge at KS3?

E.g. Use of Hyena in a test -caught students out…

@marymyatt.bsky.social gets a shout out! 😀

Skills based curriculum doesn’t get best results (see CfE in Scotland)

We need to know the ropes - where are we going. What is the end goal?
September 7, 2024 at 1:08 PM
Can’t look at assessment without unpicking curriculum.

Technology can solve problems, but they cannot tell us what our problems are.

Bad tech - solutions in search of problems.

Snickometer - works well in cricket as it is the solution to a problem.

Not going to solve the problem with handball, because it’s not an issue of if it hits the hand.

Optimising for one aspect, what is the trade off, do we risk losing everything?

Portfolio assessment…

Do we event get accuracy?

We try to optimise but end up with nothing.
September 7, 2024 at 9:46 AM
E.g speed/simplicity. Before VAR, not a great argument. But now? Is that a problem.

With assessment - also a big accuracy/speed trade off.

One assessment - some errors will happen. More assessments, fewer errors, but more time, cost, complication.

Is it worth it?

The Johns are the ones that struggle, because they don’t get the support.

But we need a cut off….
September 7, 2024 at 9:39 AM
Onto grades. Line on a continuum. We think they are discrete differences, but there aren’t.

Offside quotation from Roy.

What is the measurement error of the line?
September 7, 2024 at 9:33 AM
The impulse to have strict rules is because people want consistency.

But the problem is that rubrics can’t give that consistency… and you also have to sacrifice common sense.

So worst of both worlds.

Education and football on a Saturday. I don’t think it gets better than this.

After discussing handball, we’re onto handwriting!

Should we have ‘most’ as a qualifier for spelling?
