Creating a culture of curiosity in schools.

Practical ideas to build a curious culture in schools.

Reflected on this after going through my EdD work and came up with these ideas as I went.

What I find baffling is the almost total blindness to the fact that children have their own reasons and motivations for doing or not doing things. It's not just about capacities.

On the other hand. If only people learnt more about the law of requisite variety: there are no simple solutions for complex problems. We don't have 5 basic things that will magically solve all our reading problems.

🚨New Post🚨

Cohesion has been a common feature of many effective teams I've worked in, however cohesion is dynamic, and not constant. As Grossman et al. (2022) discuss in their paper, cohesion can mean many things.

Check out my post in cohesion below:

📢 NEW BLOG POST 📢

Last week, I had the pleasure of listening to a colleague present at the CreativeEdTrust National Conference on the role of courage in leadership.

Read my reflections, including on a paper by Peter Bregman below 👇🏽

Reflections on connection and courage in leadership
Reflections on Leadership through Peter Bregman’s Lens We often talk about what leaders do in schools; line management, accountability, vision setting. But much less often do we talk about what lea…

Absolutely chuffed that my blog from yesterday has sparked this piece by @musingsofadr.bsky.social. Dan does a much better job at bringing in ideas around this than I did and I especially like the idea that the role of leadership is to reduce uncertainty in an organisation.

I suppose this is the take really, set what fits your context but there should be much more research into this to help make leaders make the right decisions

This is the point for me.

Here's a bunch of stuff that has been proven to work. Here's why it works. This is how it works. Now go try it and make it yours.

It is one of the core principles I used when building the @literacyengine.bsky.social model for whole class modelled reading.

I think this is the difference for me too. Beliefs, shaped by prior experience, are the thing that connects to the Ladder of Inference and (my ever favourite) model of teacher dev. These differences are where the same PD input is personalised (even if we don't see it) so it's important to recognise.

Showing them practices ≠ mandating how they use them. That’s why it’s key to NOT frame those conventions as rules chiseled into tablets. They can/should be remixed, subverted, etc. but in ways that do so consciously. Less about good/bad & more about HOW/WHY they use/reject/remix those conventions.
