this is a good reminder of how things that are shitty but have been accepted as normal and inevitable can actually turn out to be abnormal and evitable with some science, time, education and political will

Useful patterns for building HTML tools

Have a nice and easygoing Advent time. I appreciate that there are only 12 days of AoC this year, since I lack time. However, I've found them quite easy so far. Do you feel the same?

Being into classical music is a trip because if you like a requiem or a concerto or something, you might have to listen to four hundred and twenty-seven different recordings to find out which is best. This opens a whole new dimension of snobbery, sign me up.

Incidentally also _cappuccino_ comes from this same source!
It's some fairly well known etymology that we owe some everyday words to Martin of Tours (d. 397).

The most famous episode of his life is when he selflessly cut his cloak (in Latin: 'cappa') in two. That cloak was later venerated in Frankish lands, from which come the words 'chapel' and 'chaplain'.
Since today is Saint Martin's Day, here's a humble image of the popular saint that I recently encountered on Veliki Brijun, Croatia. Carved for a church in Senj c. 1330, it has "Sveti Marъtinъ" written in Glagolitic letters around the saint's head – part of Croatia's long tradition of Glagolitic.

There was a 'womp' sound from the yard. I looked out the window.

Where the large pile of leaves had been, a dragon sat.

"Oi!" I called.

"The hoard was unguarded," the dragon said. "I claim it."

Every damn year. It'll leave once the leaves lose their golden hue. Meanwhile, I can't order takeaway.
