We wanted to mark this in the actual Market Cross location.

The suffragist Great Pilgrimage is a great example of different types of people coming together to effect positive democratic change.

We need to do the same now more than ever.

Britain's democracy is in crisis. Our First Past the Post voting system increasingly delivers results that have little to do with what the country wants.

This #DemocracyDay, we're calling for a fairer system where every vote counts.

It's time for Proportional Representation. #PRnow

It won't.
Under PR he'd need to get 50+% of the votes to get into power (on his own).
Under FPTP he'd only need ~33%, just like Labour did last year!!!
And should another party agree to go into coalition with him, his policies would be diluted accordingly.

Given the interest in the local elections and "the end of two-party politics" in the UK, perhaps now would be a good time to remind people about proportional recounts and what they tell us? 👇

Can you please repost this to reach as many people as we can? Thanks.

How to read @propvoting.bsky.social charts:

The top two bars show the result in the Commons. Equal bars mean equal numbers of MPs from the parties.

The bottom two bars show the proportional recount. Equal bars mean equal numbers of people who voted for the parties.

@makevotesmatter.bsky.social
This chart is a proportional recount of a vote in the House of Commons.

The top two bars show the number of MPs from each party who voted Aye or No in the division.

The bottom two bars show the number of voters those MPs represent. For example, if a party won two million votes in the general election and half of that party's MPs voted in the division, that would represent one million voters.

In many cases, more voters are represented by the MPs on the losing side. This is because seats don't match votes with First Past the Post (FPTP). Recounts are shown in terms of ideal MPs who all represent the same number of people.

The method is not a simulation of a PR elected Commons. It is intended to highlight the distortion of FPTP.
