This is why we need electoral reform so we don't sleepwalk into authoritarianism
makevotesmatter.bsky.social
Under First Past the Post, an extreme, even anti-democratic party can take full power on a fraction of the vote - without the consent of the majority.

In these troubled times, we shouldn't take our rights and freedoms for granted.

That's another reason why we need Proportional Representation.

Could First Past the Post soon work against the very party that has long defended it?

Join us and Nigel Evans to explore what electoral reform could mean for the future of the Conservatives, the centre-right and the health of British democracy.

"Time’s up for our voting system but who will be brave enough to change it?" - writes Emma Harrison, Chief Executive of @makevotesmatter.bsky.social.

In 2029, more people will be eligible to vote than ever before. But it could also be the year in which more voices than ever are ignored.

That is, unless we change the voting system so that everyone can be heard.

Purple, green and orange background with white text reading: A landmark cross-party event with the London Assembly, this is a chance to listen to and ask questions of a panel of politicians from every major party - a rare opportunity to see first-hand what it looks like to work together and get stuff done in UK politics.

"I'd love to throw it in the bin."

At #LabourConference2025, Livvy from Young Make Votes Matter asked Labour members about their opinions on the First Past the Post voting system.

Here's what they had to say 👇
makevotesmatter.bsky.social
"As Reform climb in the opinion polls, it is evident that they, like the Labour Party, could win on 34% of the vote," warns our CEO Emma Harrison at the @labour4pr.bsky.social rally.

Or less - recent polls show them winning on as little as 25% of the vote.

We have no time to waste. We need PR now.

"Keir Starmer said that the sky didn't fall in when we introduced votes at 16 in Wales and Scotland.

And I say to you, Sir Keir, that when you introduced PR, the sky didn't fall in there either."

We're at #LabourConference2025 in Liverpool, asking party members about their views on our democracy.

The message is pretty clear: our voting system is long past its sell-by date.

It’s time to take action: it’s time for Proportional Representation 💪 #Lab25

We agree @andyburnham.bsky.social 💯💯

With record support for PR - in Westminster and among the public - a fairer democracy feels firmly within our reach.

With election results being less representative than ever, it's never been more urgent.

The time for PR is now. #Lab25 #LabourConference2025

PR's time has come."
Andy Burnham

Whatever their differences, there's something that unites them - they all believe we must fix our broken democracy.

As #LabourConference2025 begins, here's a reminder: polling consistently shows that most Labour members and voters support PR. It's time for Starmer to listen.
makevotesmatter.bsky.social
"The idea of a government elected on a minority of the vote is untenable." 💯

Thank you @andyburnham.bsky.social for being such a strong and consistent voice for Proportional Representation.

We need a new kind of politics: where no voter or community is left behind.

Trudeau named not reforming the voting system as his big regret. Starmer shouldn't repeat his mistake.

The stakes are now much higher than just who wins the next election.

When there's such a disconnect between how people vote and who wins seats, trust in democracy is at risk.

Britain's First Past The Post makes a mockery of 'one person, one vote' because our votes are grotesquely unequal, giving us a parliament that misrepresents how we all voted. It's why our politics are broken. #DemocracyDay #PRnow

We wanted to mark this in the actual Market Cross location.

The suffragist Great Pilgrimage is a great example of different types of people coming together to effect positive democratic change.

We need to do the same now more than ever.

It's worth mentioning that the first paragraph is not strictly correct: winning the majority of constituencies is not the same as winning over 50% of voters.

But it's true that the more parties perform well under FPTP, the less representative and more absurd the results become.
