Beneath the pines, fungi fuel the forest 🌲❤️🍄
In her PhD thesis, Katharine King reveals how ectomycorrhizal fungi weather minerals and mobilize nitrogen—powering tree growth, nutrient cycling, and carbon storage in boreal forests.

How do you identify an organism at the molecular level – and how can that contribute to sustainable agriculture? These were some of the questions explored by Bolivian students during an international course in La Paz, led by researchers from SLU.

Threats from fungal diseases that attack pine and spruce are growing with climate change. But why are some trees more severely affected than others? Matilda Stein Åslund has investigated this in her thesis to help preserve our forests in the ongoing climate change.

Genetic variation in plants can affect how efficiently biocontrol agents can reduce diseases. In this doctoral thesis, Sidhant Chaudhary has investigated this variation to bring us closer to optimising crops for higher biocontrol responsiveness.

Last week I had the opportunity to visit the SLU Tönnersjöhedens försökspark in south-Sweden and the spore traps I've started working with at @mycopat.bsky.social These traps have been active for more than 10 years and have been sampled weekly, resulting in an exceptional airborne spore db

Impressive work by @myconet.bsky.social and colleagues, looking at how the conservation value of a boreal forest relates to diversity of soil fungi. As is often the case in ecology, the conclusion is: 'It's complicated' 🍄🌳🧪🌍

Gene-silencing spray to combat cereal disease is safe for the environment! RNA used to combat Fusarium head blight did not disturb the microbial communities living on the surface of cereal crops. This means that the method can be tested in field trials 🌱
