Her second husband Bernhard Burckmann died in 1985 and not long after Johanna moved to Broward County FL, near one of her daughters. She died there in 1987. 13/x

Johanna was the first US born child of immigrant parents. She bore five children with a first generation Bahamian immigrant of color. She seems to have worked in blue collar jobs, but she also seems to have enjoyed considerable privilege as live-in staff on a large estate. 12/x

That relationship likely would have continued through Thurlow's second marriage, the birth of the child of that marriage in 1976, and well into Russell Vought's childhood. 11/x

In 1971 her daughter Alice died in nearby Mahopac, leaving four children between four and fifteen. It seems likely she would have maintained a relationship with her grandchildren and her son in law Thurlow Vought. 10/x

Her father died in September 1951 and she married again in August 1952, to Bernhard Burckmann Jr. The wedding announcement stated they would live at the Stilwell estate. 9/x

At the 1950 census, she was living with her widowed father, son, and one daughter, still at the John Stilwell estate, working as a cook. She gave her surname as Cartwright and marital status as married. 8/x

In 1945 she gave birth to another child with Theodore, although he remarried the same year. Around 1947 she started work at Gimbel's department store where she worked in the shipping and receiving department. 7/x

She had three daughters and a son with Theodore between 1930 and 1940. At the 1940 census she was enumerated with her parents, siblings, and son in Yonkers, living and employed as a cook and chambermaid at the estate of John Stilwell, Ardenwold. Her husband and three daughters weren't with them. 6/x

The family moved to Yonkers NY and in February 1930, at age 18, Johanna married Theodore Maxwell Cartwright there. They were also enumerated in the 1930 census in Yonkers in April, living on their own. She was working as a shopgirl. 5/x

The census shows her father immigrated from Germany around 1909, her mother from what was then Austria, Polish speaking, around 1908. Other, later records confirm this information. They were married in June 1911 in Manhattan. 4/x

In the 1920 census she was enumerated with her parents and younger brother in West Milford NJ. Per her father's obituary, they lived in an unincorporated area called Newfoundland, which is partially in Milford. Her place of birth is illegible. 3/x

Johanna M Unterberg was born 12 Feb 1912 to Rudolph William Carl Unterberg and Anna Sidorski. The date is from her social security record and obituary. The obituary states she was born in Paterson NJ, but three census records state Virginia. I cannot find a birth record. 2/x

How Theodore's daughter Alice influenced her husband Thurlow and their children, and how they in turn influenced his second wife and their son Russell, I don't know. But life experiences such as these are, without a doubt, transmitted in various ways. 21/x

How this would have influenced Theodore's children, including the mother of Russell Vought's half siblings, is also hard to know. But In the era in which his children grew up and married, the stigma of even "one drop" was real, especially in the suburbs to which she moved after marriage. 19/x

World War II also ruptured families. Traumatic combat experiences often left survivors with a sense of being forever changed and at a remove from their loved ones. Many abandoned spouses and children and tried to start over, with mixed success. 18/x

Without additional family information it's impossible to know if there was a continuing connection between father and children, and later grandchildren. But if there was estrangement, it's also impossible to know if it was related to his Bahamian origins. 17/x

One of his daughters moved to south Florida in the early 1960s and it's possible they had contact there, but neither of her parents were named in her obituary in 1997. The obituaries of his other deceased children didn't name him. 16/x

He and his second wife moved to Miami and there were sporadic records there between 1955 and his death in 1974. His death notice names no family. 15/x

I can find no records of a divorce from his wife Johanna. At the 1950 census, she was enumerated with the Cartwright surname and married. But in 1945 Theodore married again, in Dade county FL. In 1950 he was enumerated with this second wife and her large extended family in northwest FL. 14/x

At the end of January the survivors were discharged from the USS Altair in New York City. Theodore was among them. After that, I can find no records for him for the rest of the war. 13/x
