Anyone else hating the Google AI stuff that comes up at the top of searches? This is (finally) making me use other tools for searching. Great way to ruin your flagship product

@support.bsky.team would be great if pictures could be looked at in landscape (screen rotate); would make reading text on picture attachments much easier.

Last call for National Trust members to vote online for council members at the AGM to keep 'Restore Trust' out
National Trust members, you have till midnight on 25 October to vote. Best thing is to use the quick vote to be sure we keep the Tufton St Restore Trust lot out. I appreciate some people would prefer to choose for themselves, but beware fragmenting the vote and letting in a Restore Trust candidate.
I will periodically keep banging on about the importance of all National Trust members voting at the AGM to keep out right-wing 'traditionalist' Restore Trust candidates for the council.
Normal service will be resumed later.

Lib Dem MP Mike Martin, whom many of you will remember for his acute analysis of the war in Ukraine, has made it on to the Defence Select Committee.

@helenczerski.bsky.social can you persuade Adam Rutherford over here? There are bunch of good and popular scientists who would add lots to this platform.
Propelled by tech money, the menace of race science is back – and it’s just as nonsensical as ever | Adam Rutherford
Once thought extinct after the fall of empire, this debunked practice has re-emerged with support from rogue experts and rich backers, says geneticist Adam Rutherford

Second, this passage has - to my ear - echoes of one of my favourite paragraphs, the last paragraph in the greatest novel in the English language.

Chris Mason earns £260,000. Turns out reporting on Whitehall bitching is worth £90,000 a year more than running the actual country.

To mark the Last Night of the Proms, but also Scooby Doo's 55th birthday, I play the Scooby Doo theme tune in the style of the Russian classics. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrR7...

Why are cryptocurrencies allowed to exist? It has been a decade and still no meaningful use case beyond illicit finance. Meanwhile they use colossal amounts of energy amidst a climate crisis. Just ban that shit please. Why do we ignore easy wins?

Farage is rapidly trying to talk his way out of any involvement in the riots. On LBC he just blamed Andrew Tate for misinforming him.

Which is as stupid and pathetic as it sounds for an elected MP.

Dark already. End of British Summer Time - a festival of misery, and an annual act of national self-harm.

The idea of making money to give to charity isn't so daft. Where it falls down is in knowing where to put your money for maximum effect. And when it started crystal ball gazing into the future it really lost its way.
Effective Altruism always struck me as a nihilist grift. The glorifying of making money dressed up in philosophy
Story of Effective Altruism so far: a bunch of Oxford scholars invents an ideology were entrepreneurs are heroes and power structures are absent. Rich people like this ideology and gives it tons of funding. Then, the same rich people slowly starts to morph the ideology into techno fascism.
