NHK dropped by the lab yesterday to interview us regarding marine debris. We had a discussion about marine debris in seagrass ecosystems and showed them some examples from last month (June 2025). About half of the plastic debris is fisheries related with the remainder being plastic bags.

This year, the winter water temperature dropped below 15 ℃ t Arikawa Bay so the hijiki (Sargassum fusiforme) developed very well.

So here we are in Nagasaki. We will survey a seagrass site and measure sediment carbon, the coverage of the seagrass, the amount of marine debris in the seagrass bed, and the location of the marine debris using a total station. This is the first time my lab students are going to try this!

I haven't posted in a long time. Anyway, today we're at Arikawa Bay in the northern Goto islands to conduct our monthly survey of seaweed beds. The water is a little choppy but it's easy to see the seaweeds from shore. This year there's a lot of Undaria and Sarg assum compared to last year.
