I actually have no words left today.
We are outraged and deeply distressed that armed federal agents came onto our campus—making arrests on the very ground where, in 1942, Japanese American families were forced to board buses bound for concentration camps. It was a deliberate act of provocation and intimidation.

The key thing that makes Instagram unusable is the inability to connect with people. They went so hard on catering to influencers that it's impossible to find & make friends with like-minded people. Which is, of course, supposed to be what social media is FOR.

What Even Is Instagram Now?
Long after shifting your feed away from friends and toward influencers, Instagram is adding new features intended to make the app more personal. The turnabout exposes the platform’s identity crisis.

Six years after making headlines for coming out as a douchebag for living in Japan while refusing to learn Japanese so as not to puncture its “mystery,” author Pico Iyer is doubling down, calling Japanese sentences “mongrel” in an article The NY Times probably paid him good money to write.

I see it. I have lived it. 83 years ago, the U.S. government turned upon a group of its own citizens and residents and sent them to internment camps without due process. I was there among them. American fascism is back. It is here. It is now.

Hokkaido, now considered so indisputably and integrally Japanese, has only truly been part of the Japanese mainland for the past 150 years. Who lived there before its colonization by the Japanese? And how do the island’s indigenous people, the Ainu, fare today?

How a mysterious frontier island peopled by "barbarians" became one of the four main islands of Japan - and how the original inhabitants suffered as a result.

“We don’t want the books, just the quotes.”

I want to talk about this further not to dunk on this person, but to highlight an issue I see today on social media regarding Chinese Philosophy, Japanese Philosophy, etc.

Wisdom *isn’t* for social clout.

american masculinity is so amazing. caring about clothes as a man apparently makes you "gay" but our position on geopolitics totally depends on whether you wear a suit

Someone was very earnestly arguing in UJ DMs that the reaction to Mogami Ai "wasn't misogyny" and I don't know how to explain to someone who doesn't get it that sympathizing with a man who murdered a woman over money is, at its root, misogynistic.

Step back a little and ponder how unpractical and stupid suits are. They have become the flag and uniform of male white supremacy. I used to aspire to be a guy who wore a suit (heavy suit & tie culture in church) but I haven’t wore one since Mim’s funeral. It’s really one of the most absurd norms.
GLENN: Why don't you wear a suit? You're at the highest level in this country's office & you refuse to wear a suit. A lot of Americans have problems with you not respecting the office.

ZELENSKYY: I will wear a costume after this war will finish. Maybe something like yours. Maybe something better.

The real MeToo “cancel culture” was what happened to the women and other victims who came forward. They were retraumatized, harassed, humiliated, sued, fired, and blacklisted. Then they were the subject of a revisionist history that MeToo went “too far” and deserved a reactionary backlash

A personal pet peeve of mine is when tourists make sweeping statements about countries they do not live in and never have lived in. They feel qualified somehow to speak about the quality of life in that country, but how can they when they’ve never lived there?

A big problem with most people on social media talking about Japan in English is that they either have no idea what they're talking about or they're grifters using cotton candy content to build up a follower base. Always check profiles and make sure that person is legit.

Because it’s directly related to how I had my heart attack, I wrote a small article based on threads from here about female bullying in the workplace. I used examples of how the VP treated me to illustrate my point.

I’d love to do a deeper dive later, but for now:
