Trailblazing ADHD Research Uncovers Biological Pathways Connecting Genes to Behavior
In the realm of molecular psychiatry, few figures have shaped the landscape as profoundly as Professor Barbara Franke. Her journey from a curious child enthralled by the wonders of nature to a pioneering researcher unraveling the molecular underpinnings of neurodevelopmental disorders exemplifies the transformative power of interdisciplinary science. Based at Radboud University Medical Center and the Donders Institute in the Netherlands, Franke’s work has been instrumental in deciphering how genetic variations translate into altered behaviors, particularly in conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Is interoceptive sensing unified across internal organs? 🫀🫁 Our high-powered psychophysical study (N=241) suggests not. Bayesian evidence indicates interoceptive processes are largely modality-specific—challenging the idea of a unitary interoceptive sense.

1/ We can measure interoception in many aspects, but can we actually manipulate it? I’m excited to share our new study, which shows that blockade of peripheral beta-adrenergic pathways improves cardiac and respiratory interoception in unique ways! 🧵 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Gentle, slow stroke touch significantly moves the heart by lowering rate and increasing rhythmicity. This effect is much stronger when someone else touches us, compared to self-touch. Out now in IEEE Trans Affective Comp @rebeccaboehme.bsky.social, @paulasalamone.bsky.social doi.org/10.1109/TAFF...

How the brain senses the body
Researchers are uncovering how interoception, the body’s unconscious perception of internal states, can impact both brain and body.

Finally, the late Bud Craig gave a talk on the functional neuroanatomy of the insula at Cog Neuro Society in 2008. That was the very first conference talk I had ever been to and is still the best I've ever seen. His thoughts on all of the insula are indispensable. www.nature.com/articles/nrn...
