Human pluripotent stem cell-derived astrocytes from both two- and three-dimensional models confirmed that glutamate signalling is directly impacted by glucocorticoid activation.

Early-life adversity exposure produced more pronounced cellular changes than adversity experienced later in life, and female cases displayed stronger transcriptomic associations than males with adversity exposure.

In individuals with psychiatric disorders and high adversity exposure, we identified distinct alterations to glutamate-related synaptic functions, supported by histological quantification of >20,000 astrocytes.

We probed the diversity of ∼145,000 total human cortical astrocytes with single nucleus and spatial transcriptomics, and showed that human astrocytes comprise a molecularly and anatomically diverse cell population.

Wonderful visits, highlighted the need for face-to-face interactions. Cant wait for all our upcoming collabs 🙌 thanks for carving time out to come see us @drcricru.bsky.social @nikosdaskalakis.bsky.social @rcbagot.bsky.social

BIOLOGICAL STRESS
hannahthomasy.bsky.social
It’s wild that “species” is one of the most fundamental concepts in biology but we can’t really define it & there are LOTS of organisms that experts disagree about. Are there other concepts in science that seem simple from the outside but are actually complicated? Plz dish the drama in your field🧪🧬🦠
What defines a species? Inside the fierce debate that's rocking biology to its core
The question of what defines a species has vexed scientists across the ages, particularly in conservation, where decisions require a firm understanding of biodiversity.

🚨 NEW PAPER 🚨
Thrilled to share our latest work in "The Neurobiology of Stress" where we highlight the intricate roles of neuropeptides and neurosteroids in psychiatric disorders, & how new technologies can answer old questions about these important signallers. sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Expanding our understanding of (mal)adapted stress physiology in psychiatric disorders: achieving single-cell characterisation of steroids and neuropeptides
Steroid hormones and neurosteroids (collectively neuroactive steroids), alongside neuropeptides, are key modulators of the central nervous system. The…
