what exactly is wrong about "retaining information"? you can use tricks for it, obviously, but a game being compelling is also another way to "retain attention". at what point do you draw the line between "this is manipulative" and "this isn't"

that was kind of the impression i got, but that makes sense! ultimately i respect what you're doing with this movement in regards to helping people understand their own game design ideals better, even if i think it's a bit silly. my apologies if i came off as aggressive/rude

ya, i get it if it helps you and others go through your thoughts. there's just this somewhat objective language you've used and it's hard to tell what's exaggerating and what's genuine with how vocal you've been about this

i'm down for a piece of media that breaks down the idea of a "game" into its barest essentials. but i don't see much wrong with those games that are working in the pre-defined genres and game design ideas we have today... i enjoy them, and i don't wish to see them replaced

i'm interested in seeing what art you create as a result of this philosophy, of course, but i wouldn't say games like Tetris, or Super Mario Bros., or whatever Hot Wax is, are in some way, "less valid" pieces of art. the systems in themself are art! the challenges are art! it's all art!

gameplay is about this interaction: rules set by the designer, of what you can do, and can't do, and the results of the actions that you take. i'm fully in favor of fighting concepts like "gamification" and gameplay loops "designed to be addictive", but what you're doing is so disconnected!

i recall slay the princess being listed as an example... and slay the princess has gameplay! you select from a limited range of choices and are presented with a result: that's gameplay at its most simplest. the goal is, ultimately, to "see everything", at least by the bounds of the game
January 10, 2025 at 2:36 AM
i'm fully in favor of other forms of game-like interactive digital media, of course. i understand what you're TRYING to go for. but ultimately this weird, unspecified goal, to strip the definition of a medium from itself, just isn't working out, i think. any "game" has "gameplay" no matter how basic
January 10, 2025 at 2:35 AM
i really think this overthinking is going to actively set back your work and the people who listen to it... it's just this utterly bizarre mindset, to proclaim that "gameplay" is anti-art. the systems themselves are a piece of art, and the ways they interact are a beauty in itself
January 10, 2025 at 2:33 AM
why are you over here pontificating? all of this posting has crossed the line of practical and become purely theoretical... there are people out there making good games and they're posting about just, games, instead of trying to analyze other mediums for their theoretical, unspecified ideas
January 10, 2025 at 2:32 AM
i can see why you would hate the game that much if that was your experience with it, yea
i think the game gets unfulfilling at a point. the major difference with its inspiration was the presence of an actual ending, lol

i think the love for "addictive" games comes from wanting to do something with the downtime in your life. it's mindless, sure, but it's something positive, as compared to, say, the numb-ness of scrolling through social media - people don't have good places to spend time anymore so they go to games
January 9, 2025 at 4:08 AM
ya, i think it's always good to understand media before riffing on it. this comes up a lot in fanworks especially
January 9, 2025 at 4:02 AM
listing game "inspirations" is oftentimes a good way to get eyes on a game regardless of actual similarity.

at the same time, a lot of indie devs are also just trying to make something that's more of a Thing They Like and that's fine, even if it isn't always super original

is gameplay a beautiful language or something to be opposed? there are many perspectives

maybe we should all be game enjoyers....
January 3, 2025 at 2:16 AM
bad game haters when the good game enjoyers walk in
January 3, 2025 at 2:15 AM
do you ever think of going back in time and changing how a conversation went? the real question is if you want to do that, or keep it as messy as it is

a game that controls like a car would be *shopping cart* controls, not tank controls. very big difference
