Tonight I’ll be doing a live comics reading from my book FALL THROUGH as part of a benefit for @bamfzinefest.bsky.social — it’s at the Orbit Room (107 N. College, Bloomington) from 6-8pm with several other writers of all kinds. See you there!

Over the weekend, Trump's deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller repeatedly attacked judges, calling them part of an "organized terrorist attack" on the US government....

On Saturday, the home of a judge who ruled against Trump, went up in flames

history teacher in 50 years: So in September, that’s when the president signed an executive order criminalizing anti-fascism and saying all resistance would be crushed

student: oh so that’s when the whole country realized they were living under fascism

teacher: haha what? oh no lol not at all. no.

The history teacher is going to be stuck on “why didn’t the Biden admin punish sedition and why was a seditionist even allowed to run for president again” for a long, long time…Americans stopped believing they had a functional government long before they started believing they had a fascist one

New MINOR ARCANA variant cover— issue & release date tbc!

Always a delight to contribute to any of Jeff Lemire’s creations— we’ve been making comics in a similar vein for the past two decades, and it’s wonderful to see him carve out a space for his vision & creative sensibility to thrive.

- We need cheaper printed black and white comics for the love of god
- Comics for adults could do crazy numbers if they actually had support, pubs are leaving money on the table
- Prose authors shouldn't be hired to write comics based on prose chops alone
- Cartoonists should be paid 700x more

Back in 2016, I interviewed the late, legendary Congressman John Lewis for @salon.com about his brilliant graphic-memoir series "March," co-written with @natepowell.bsky.social and @andrewaydin.bsky.social, who also joined the interview.

His answer to this question sticks with me.
Text that reads:

This is a really tough and tumultuous time for race relations in this country. Congressman Lewis, are you worried? Are you hopeful? What do you think are some of the answers to some of the really deep divisions we still see today? Text that reads:

Lewis: In spite of all of the things, the issues, that we may be confronting today, I’m very hopeful, very optimistic about the future. That’s why I want to see people pick up “March.” [They will see] we never gave up. We didn’t get lost in a sea of despair. We kept the faith. We kept pushing and pulling. We kept marching. And we made some progress. And when people tell me nothing has changed, I just feel like saying, “Come and walk in my shoes.” Our struggle is a struggle to redeem the soul of America. It’s not a struggle that lasts for a few days, a few weeks, a few months, or a few years. It is the struggle of a lifetime, more than one lifetime. But I truly believe that one day we will get there, we will arrive. And if we do it right in America, maybe, just maybe, we can serve as a model for the rest of the world.

Highly recommended for shadow season: NOCTURNOS, the excellent, hushed, impressionistic new graphic novel by @lauraperezgranel.bsky.social from Fantagraphics!

In all seriousness, publishers are going to have to figure out how to market books in the post-social-media landscape. That should be an implicit part of their job. What authors/artists can do on their own is increasingly limited and siloed.

"For no kingdom can maintain itself by force alone. Force does not work the way its advocates think in fact it does. It does not, for example, reveal to the victim the strength of the adversary. On the contrary, it reveals the weakness, even the panic of the adversary." -James Baldwin

As I was beginning to organize my thoughts for ANY EMPIRE (2011), I was struck by the nature of wartime rubble as seen on new broadcasts as former houses, schools, hospitals— and struck again by our possible American future, with wartime rubble in our own streets, at the hands of American troops.

Project: Metropolis trained soldiers for “urban warfare” in various lower-income sections of our cities, including my hometown of North Little Rock. I (correctly) interpreted this not as urban operations abroad, but potential occupations of our own communities.

No US troops invading US streets, committing violence & repression on us all.

Our military has engaged in ominous precedents to these operations even in this century— notably Project: Metropolis in 2003.

the president of the united states wants to use the american military to kill american citizens on american soil. that's the whole story!

If any other president in all of history said the military should use American cities as a training ground he would be removed from office that same day. The hardest thing to tolerate in all this is how relatively silent elected democrats are. It’s ridiculous.
