Pinned skeet time.

Hi! I’m a tall queer guy who writes (mostly) shorter queer things, though novels keep happening somehow. Mostly I tell tales that exist somewhere in the Venn of spec-fic, romance, and YA, but always queer.

I’m a huge fan of chosen families and insistent queer history.
A panel I moderated at Nottignham’s Queer the Shelves. From left to right: C.J. Debarra, K.C. Lylark, Simon Smalley, Hope Newhouse and Thom Seddon (then me).

My entire writing career. (No, really.)

Also my initial writing community.

Technically, I can also say I met my husband because of someone I met through my university chat groups who became one of my best friends.

Has anything great happened in your life because of social media?
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
For sure, he nodded, nodding noddily.

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

A great article from Rachel, who really understands the heart and soul of Dad’s work.
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
OMG, he did utter magic with that. Like, I had even *less* I could offer him for guidance on that one.

If you decide to have children, you have to do so knowing that your child could be gay, trans, etc., and if you go into it knowing that you wouldn't support them if that were the case, you don't love them and you shouldn't be having children.

1. In a devastating new Pew Research Survey, only 3 in 10 transgender adults report being accepted by their parents.

And only 1 in 10 say they are accepted by their extended family.

This is the lowest number ever found in surveys asking similar questions.

Pew Survey: Only 31% Of Trans People Report Being Accepted By Their Parents
The survey comes as transgender people experience a legal assault from the far-right in the United States.

Scam alert: there's an IngramSpark impersonator at ingramsparkbookpublishers dot com. Part of a wave of publishing/ghostwriting scams from Pakistan that hijack authors looking to self-publish--they often "borrow" well-known publisher names but this one also "borrows" the real IngramSpark's logo
Screenshot of IngramSpark impersonator's contact form, with chat window where scammer sales rep "Travis Clark" claims that "We are Ingram Spark's hands-on services department. You will be able to find our information here: https://www.ingramsparkbookpublishers.com/

The whole series looks like this, too, and I love each and every one of them because of @inkspiraldesign.bsky.social. #BookSky
The cover of Handmade Holidays (in audiobook), written by 'Nathan Burgoine, read by Giancarlo Herrera; It’s an illustrated cover with a brick building, at night, through a window in which a decorated Christmas tree is visible with two men standing near it. The title, "Handmade Holidays" has the word "Handmade" written in stylish writing on a white card and covering what is obviously "Happy" on an angle, as though someone slapped the "Handmade" over the sentiment "Happy Holidays." The illustrated cover of Faux Ho Ho by 'Nathan Burgoine; two men stand in front of a snow-covered open patio (snow is falling). Behind them are red-table-clothed tables, and above them are strings of lights. The title: "Faux Ho Ho," has the first word, "Faux" written on a card in a different script and slapped slightly crookedly across where a "Ho" is visible beneath, as though someone slapped the "Faux" overtop of Ho Ho Ho. An illustrated cover of Village Fool; It’s raining; one man is walking down the street, another sits under the awning of a coffee shop, drinking a coffee. The title "Village Fool" includes the word "Village" as though it’s written on a white card and is covering the what is still vaguely visible as the word "April," as though someone took "Village" and slapped it over the phrase "April Fool" The illustrated cover of Felix Navidad by 'Nathan Burgoine; two men stand in the cold snow and ice in front of a small cabin covered in icicles. The title has the word "Felix" written in script on a white card, crooked, and covering (but leaving legible) the word "Feliz" behind it, as though someone slapped the word "Felix" over the holiday greeting "Feliz Navidad."

We have *no* full sun, which is why our growth is so slow; I’m pretty sure milkweed needs sun (or at least, that’s what I vaguely recall from looking into it).

Such a banner year for bees here, too! And So many little white butterflies. It’s been so lovely to see the slow change year after year.
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
This is still one of my favourite covers, and I have to tell you how little I offered this amazing designer. "Okay, so it’s a fauxmance, here’s what the two guys look like, uh, it’s about a wedding and Christmassy and the title is Faux Ho Ho—get it?"

The thing he did with the title card ALONE.

What Successful (and Usually Super Attractive) People With Imposter Syndrome Try To Do: "Today I feel worthless and horrible and I’m sharing that because I think it will help others in the same position."

What My Brain Does: "OMG, *they* don’t even feel worthy? I’m *definitely* not worthy."
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
Also the watering. We’ll be weeks into a no-rain drought and people are still watering their useless monoculture squares and I hate it.
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
I made it to the end and didn’t swear once.

That was awful. 100% "We’re going to do this no matter what you say, please tell us why we should!"
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
This survey goes on forever with variations of the same "how can we do ethical thing with this unethical software?" questions and I hate it.
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
It’s possible I’m getting less and less polite.
Screen shot of part of the survey. "How does Canada get to more and stronger AI industrial champions? What supports would make our champions own the podium?
(i.e. barriers to scaling, including mentorship needs; effective mechanisms for transitioning between federal programs; tailored support across early-, mid- and late-stage growth)"

My answer is: "I do not want Canada to have an AI champion owning a podium based on plagiarism theftware that spits out untruths, racism, and turns human creativity into soulless slop."
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
It’s based on breaking IP rules from step one. You don’t have to look further than Anthropic to see this in reality. Stop pretending there’s some way to do this right. There are no economic safeguards for a business model based on theft.
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
Every single question on this survey is in bad faith, as they start from a position of "how do we use this unethical software ethically?"

You can’t. You just can’t. LLM AI was built on stolen material. It a technological version of "fruit of the poisonous tree."
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
Frankly, I imagine it would impact every facet of Canadian life positively except for a few CEOs who have dug themselves into massive venture capital holes that need someone to buy in before their house of cards collapses. And I don’t care about the CEOs."
nathanburgoine.bsky.social
Just fillin’ in a survey…

"The biggest potential positive impact for so-called "AI" (especially LLMs) in Canada would be to not use it or support it in any way. That would impact the environment positively, the arts positively, the entertainment industry positively, academia positively...

When did you first realize that it's silly and a waste of time to rake up all the leaves in your yard, when if you leave them there they break down over the winter and also provide habitat and help the grass grow? Ever since I gave up that crap, fall has been much more relaxed.
