With labor friends like these, who needs enemies?

NEW: ICE agents violently arrested a man in a busy Hyattsville, MD intersection this week, at one point brandishing guns and pointing them at bystanders.

I spoke to multiple witnesses—including a local priest whose church is a sanctuary for undocumented people: www.thehandbasket.co/p/ice-agents...

No, it's not just passing the same $100 billion back and forth...we generated $200 billion in GDP...

At UMich, CS students have been raiding the school of information offices for coffee/snacks and it has led to huge messes like someone pissing in a trash can and spilling coffee everywhere

So now facilities has implemented what SI grads lovingly refer to as martial law in order to reclaim our land

giving a talk on Fri on a panel led by @oddletters.bsky.social; I’ll talk about imperial ambitions in Silicon Valley’s 2001 conjuncture caught between the dot com crash and the post9/11 rise of the security state

Right it’s not like google is maintaining its monopoly by having a better search product or anything so sharing search data effectively does nothing to break up the monopoly

This Google decision appears to be a complete failure to break up its monopoly. It has to share *some* search data? Big deal. Plus it can still legally do search engine payola. And no Chrome sale.

A best possible outcome for Google, the same monopolized, enshittified internet for the rest of us.

I worked at a USDA dairy lab the summer after high school and one of our primary research goals was finding uses for millions of tons of whey protein that was a byproduct of subsidized cheese production. This was when I first learned about the Missouri Cheese Caves

I feel like we haven’t really talked enough about how much of MAHA/masc-coded wellness grift is just boosterism for the cattle industry

- collagen
- whey protein
- colostrum
- tallow
- organ meats

It’s all repackaged beef & dairy byproduct, baby

perhaps this is a criticism i only get in a so-called "school of information" where any real understanding of the world is traded for both a blind empiricism and a daily splurge of dime-a-dozen concepts, and announcing this to the world is the only naive aspect in this thread

3) it feels particularly wrong to say this about our *current* moment -- given it is clear not only that this is a product of many decades or centuries of violence (not a trivially bounded moment), but also because we ended up here because such analyses of prior conjunctures were absent
nathanckim.bsky.social
2) it's exactly in those conjunctures that we can make sense out of much longer running processes! those moments are where existing theories fail (at least from an initial read) to explain how we ended up in a specific moment, and for those reasons are rich in potential insights
nathanckim.bsky.social
1) ALL papers respond to particular historical moments and searching for a universal or timeless intervention is not only narrow minded but also dishonest about what any given project does
nathanckim.bsky.social
inviting thoughts: i think criticizing a paper for situating itself within a particular historical moment as limiting its accessibility and longetivity is absurd. We exist in historical moments, people --

Nvidia gets the spotlight, but *two* major groups are selling shovels in the AI gold rush, who profit whether or not AI products pan out: Chipmakers and Big Cloud—Google, Microsoft + Amazon.

A new study by @davidthewid.bsky.social + Nathan Kim shows how the AI boom is fueling Big Cloud's land grab:
The real winner of the AI boom so far? Big Cloud
How Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are concentrating even more power in the age of AI.
