Hello! I write a weekly column for the New Yorker (mostly restaurant reviews, sometimes other vibey stuff) called The Food Scene. It’s also conveniently available as an email—the whole article, in full, no paywall!—which you can sign up for here:

I find the quest to make the dryest or filthiest martini to be exhausting in the same way I wish they'd stop piling shit on caesars/bloody marys or milkshakes, so I appreciate @jayasaxena.com's piece on wet, sweet & floral martinis having their day slate.com/life/2025/10...

they don’t want you to know how they treat prisoners because it will grieve you to know it, which is natural and human, and because of your normal human reaction you will want the system changed. It’s important to them that your natural aversion to how the system works not be engaged.

Karen the lindor truffles are for *me*

I detached my post from this quote, such a disgusting thing to even think, let alone blithely post publicly
hels.bsky.social
I don’t think the emotion isn’t real, certainly.

Sensical AND sensible!
hels.bsky.social
It might just be a tautological difference of terminology — I don’t think any of my AZ or pro-🍉 friends would consider themselves 2SS-endorsing, more like exhaustedly willing to accept it

If you get the newsletter on Saturdays (which print subscribers do) the web version hasn’t published yet! It goes live on Sunday.

No I completely agree with your position — but almost every person I encounter who actively supports 2SS seems to mostly want it so Israel can continue uninterrupted and uncriticized

What’s “funny” about this is that the notion that Jewish people can’t integrate and remain in a multi-demographic society is an anti-semitic canard and also the justification under which the Nazis distributed pro-colonial newspapers. It’d be a darkly comic irony if not for the mass death.

The idea that Israel cannot be (cannot become, cannot sustain as) pluralistic is a racist sleight-of-hand. There’s absolutely no reason there can’t be one integrated state EXCEPT that it would require dismantling the current system of judeosupremacist apartheid.

I honor the beautiful bubble you seem to be in
hels.bsky.social
That’s just a little from #1 and a little from #2

I don’t think that rewarding/maintaining judeosupremacy is meaningfully distinct from supporting judeosupremacy! Unless their 2SS endorsement is being explicitly framed as a last-ditch option due to Israel’s moral irredeemablity, I guess.

Agree with your points, but I think many people push for the two-state solution because they don't believe Israel would ever accept Palestinians as equal citizens in their society (and we're much closer to genocide and forced relocation).

I’m saying I find it hard to believe the people who support it now have ever actually cared about what Palestinians want
hels.bsky.social
It was not actually a really good metajoke it was pretty bad
hels.bsky.social
I had a really good metajoke in the column I just filed about how a certain sentence could be read in past tense or present subjunctive at the reader’s discretion, and my editor cut it and I GET IT but also aw man
hels.bsky.social
As if they’ve ever cared about what Palestinians want
hels.bsky.social
Yes! — arguably a subset of option 3
hels.bsky.social
Who knows! Could be anywhere!

If someone calls for a two-state solution you should push them to be specific abt why they don’t support one state. It always comes down to one of three things:
- they think Palestinians are subhuman
- they support judeosupremacy
- they’ve actually never really thought about it before

If it were to happen — which certainly would be preferable to the status quo — it should be considered both a last resort and an appalling failure.
