Watched The Changeling (1980) when I couldn’t sleep last night. George C. Scott is superb in this one. Atmosphere for days. Classic haunted house vibes, deliberate pace. Solid flick.

If you’re looking for autumn vibes, you could do a lot worse than to watch Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) adapted from Ray Bradbury’s equally excellent novel.

I’m here to recommend a fantastic book for the whole family, John the Skeleton by Estonian writer Triinu Laan. This story about a retired classroom skeleton has a lot to say about life and death. It’s also funny, eerie, and even a touch magical. #bookrecs

This story had a huge influence Lovecraft’s work.
If you’ve never read The Willows by Algernon Blackwood, now’s a good time. The novella was published in 1907, but the fears depicted are timeless. #horror

As an 8-year-old spud, I was obsessed with DEVO, had all their albums on cassette, & watched their collected videos constantly. I just saw the new DEVO documentary, and as a lifelong fan it was pretty thrilling to experience all the unprecedented photos, footage, & stories. Relevant as ever.

We’ve all seen the weird British folk horror film from 1971, Blood on Satan’s Claw. But did you know there’s a novelization by the original screenwriter, Robert Wynne-Simmons? Or that the illustrations are lino cut and lovingly hand-printed by Richard Wells? Now you do. @slipperyjack.bsky.social

Just finished reading Daphne by @joshmalerman.bsky.social. You can read Daphne in a couple of sittings, but weird imagery and crucial scenes will stick around in your head long after you return the book to your shelf. I may have to rush into another Josh Malerman story. Any recommendations?

Rare promotional print for the 1957 Lon Chaney Biopic film, Man of a Thousand Faces. The print features the actor, James Cagney doing a wardrobe test in the Phantom of the Opera costume and makeup.

I visited A Nightmare in New Hope, PA. It’s a gallery of screen-used props, effects, costumes, and memorabilia. They give you a tour for five bucks! Or free, if you buy something in their attached shop.

Found this at Panoply Books in Lambertville, NJ. They specialize in rare, offbeat, and/or out-of-print books. Yet another reason to support small bookstores!

I just finished Night Film by Marisha Pessl. The story follows a journalist investigating a reclusive director, but at nearly 700 pages, the rabbit hole feels endless and winding. I definitely recommend this one.

I read Disappearance at Devil’s Rock by @paultremblay.bsky.social a couple weeks ago, and I’m still thinking about it throughout the day, despite having read another book since then. There’s one major question niggling at me, so next time I encounter Tremblay I’ll attempt to charm it out of him.

“Humans Can Be Very Depressing”: David Cronenberg, By Jim Jarmusch
Moments after they learned about the passing of David Lynch, the 82-year-old movie master called his fellow director to discuss mortality, memory, and the end of cinema as we know it.
