I also appreciate how the orchestration was a chance for Giles to really honor his father, George Martin. In that way, the completion of this song closes the circle on John & Paul, but it celebrates the legacy of the 2 Georges and their influence on those left behind to carry on.

Gearge’s lead playing is still here, but Paul made the remarkably sweet choice to play slide guitar, both in honor of George and also to make this trilogy complete.

Now & Then is remarkable in this context because John’s vocal, for all the talk about machine assisted learning for cleaning it up, still sounds like it’s off of a cassette.

At this point, it’s clear that Jeff Lynn’s being handcuffed to a click track is really holding Ringo back, probably the least Beatle-y aspect of these tracks. George, again, is the MVP for adding a bit of swing via his lead playing.

The vocal track still sounds a bit thin and hollow, but because the orchestration is so lush it really seems like a creative choice instead of a limitation.

The 2nd song, Real Love, I’ve always been shocked want a track from Double Fantasy.

Still sounds more like a George song, production-wise, because of Jeff Lynn’s production, which is always funny to me because ELO always sounded like it was trying SO HARD to sound like Lennon & McCartney.

Also notable that on this remix they opted to keep the John vocal sounding like it’s still off a crappy cassette.

Also a change in the lyrics of George’s verses from “life” to “love that we once knew.”

Free As a Bird, the first of these to be released, is pretty solid. Slow and plodding, it eventually ‘takes flight’ when George gets his back-to-back singing and slide guitar solos. MVP status for George!

Too true. She’d also probably power through episodes of Pete the Cat at 3xs fast forward if I let her! 😭
